1936 air cleaner question
I have recently seen an air cleaner (dry type) with what looks like a circular felt pad under the ribbed circular lid. This pad apparently is sandwiched between the lid and the three axial arms which hold the threaded stud for the lid. Never seen this before and can’t imagine it would serve any function. Anyone else ? Thank you.

Re: 1936 air cleaner question
Yeah, my 39 dry air filter has the same set up. I figure it is for sound deadening and perhaps helps catch a little dirt while also sealing off the top part and directing air through the copper "pot scrubber" portion of the filter.

No instructions included so I assume you just leave it alone.

Re: 1936 air cleaner question
Thank you; I’ve found some jute which may be appropriate

Re: 1936 air cleaner question
x2 what Terry says. Be sure there is some structure to the jute and it will stay in position on the underside of the lid. On more than a few occasions I've pulled the 'jute'
out of the air horn. Charlie ny |

Re: 1936 air cleaner question
Can say that if the stiched seam comes apart the old 34 don't run good anymore . Roy Nacewicz used to make these if memory serves me correctly . All 34 dry type air cleaners had them .

I miss Roy. He was a fun fellow to know.

Re: 1936 air cleaner question
I’ll prototype one using jute with a stiffened mesh underlayment and post a picture when complete

Re: 1936 air cleaner question
Well, here’s the first prototype. Felt pad cut to size with center hole at 25% of overall width. “Jute” mesh first stiffened with matte clear spray and then adhered to felt pad with 3M spray photo adhesive. If nothing else, the initial VOC load should provide a performance boost.
I had to buy a lot of material and am pleased to share felt / “jute” components with others for postage. PM me if interested, and, again, thank you to all for your comments along the way.

Re: 1936 air cleaner question
It does soften the intake sound a bit, although this may be too subtle for it to be the sole purpose.
