Default ‘54 Mercury Y Block

Hey everyone, I just pickup up a solid 54 Mercury Monterey.

Looking at the motor I thought the 54 y blocks came with only 2 barrel carb setups but this one has a 4 barrel tea pot carb. My friend has a 54 ford but only 2 barrel.

I know the merc had a 256 vs 239 in 54 but did the carb and intake setups change also ? Or did someone install a 56-later intake ?

An original 4bbl '54 intake manifold on your 256 will have an EBY prefix casting number.
They look very similar to the 4bbl ECB intake manifolds for '55 292's but aren't exactly the same.
I suspect the inner diameter of the runners and ports to the heads are slightly larger for '55.

There will also be EBY prefix ID numbers on the block (at the base of the distributor) and heads.

The Mercury cars were always a step ahead of the Ford cars in the power department back in those days.

If you haven't heard it, I recommend that you listen to Steve Miller's "Gonna Buy me a Mercury."

Most definitely were ahead of the fords. This is why we only were looking for a mercury. All the details to over the ford customline a and mainlines.

My Pop was sold on the Mercury cars. We had a 1951 coupe that I wished he'd kept but he traded it for a like new 1951 Sport Sedan 4-door that I still have. My sister was injured in the coupe when pop had to hit the brakes hard and she fell off the back seat and got her head caught between the front seat back cushion and the lower seat bottom when the seat back went forward in the screeching stop and then back. They didn't have child seats back then. Needless to say, my Mom told him it had to go for a family car where the seats were rigid but I love the old Sport Sedan. It was my first hand me down car.

Pop bought a new 1960 Comet after that but it was not anywhere near a performance car with the little 144 6-cylinder. The first Comet was supposed to be the bottom of the Edsel line up but the Edsel was cancelled so it moved over to the Mercury line up. Pop traded it off as soon as the new 1962 Mercury Meteor came out. It had a 260 V8 and add on air conditioning. It was heaven compared to the old Comet.

Little bit of trivia, the 1954 Mercury 256 which had a 4 barrel and dual exhaust were used in 1954 Ford Police Interceptors.

I am close to finishing my 54 Mercury restoration. I know just about all the parts on it. Someone had put a 2 bbl and intake on it, but I restored to the original. 4bbl. What model did you find?

Well mine has the 4barrel 4v carb on it now. I’m swapping over to a 57 intake and 2 barrel Holley 2300 carb with 57 distributor and oil pump gear.

I have seen some sun valley cars with 2 barrel and dual exhaust manifold.
