Default Help ! Help !

How do I remove the starter bendix cover ? I'm having trouble engaging the bendix to the flywheel starter ring.

Not removable unless you use a hammer and chisel

Are you using correct flywheel for engine? Using an EARLY (BEFORE 1949) flywheel on a LATE (1949-1953 8BA-type) engine will cause misalignment of ring gear.

Likewise, using a LATE flywheel on an EARLY engine will also misalign the starter drive and ring gear.

LATE flywheels have clutch bolt holes drilled ALL the way through flywheel. EARLY flywheels have six BLIND holes for clutch bolts. DD

Please explain exactly what year, make and model engine you are working on and whether or not you are using stock parts. Don't mess with the starter drive cover as it will only make things worse.

My problem is with my 1937 Ford with the stock flathead engine (80hp) and stock flywheel .However, I installed T5 trans with the open drive shaft conversion. It appears that the bendix is engaged to the starter ring( won't return to the normal position ) Mind you its on the hoist right now. I'm thinking the best way to free it would be to lower it to the ground -push it in reverse - pop the the clutch -enabling bendix to return to the normal position
. what do you think ?????

Those "Bendixes" will get 'hung-up' on the ring gear on occasion, which it sounds like yours' has. And what you say is the general idea for freeing the culprit......EXCEPT......try it like this. Just put the trans in 3rd gear (or 2nd), and rock the car back and forth just enough to move the flywheel. It works! DD

Just turn the motor over backwards. No need to be on the ground

I suggest that you find the problem BEFORE installing engine. It sounds as if you have mis matched parts 1 JMHO good luck. kerk
