Default Synchro kit?

Does anyone make a synchro kit for stock 31 transmission? I’m rebuilding a spare transmission and would to add synchros if possible.

No. The only way I know of to get a 31 transmission with synchros is to get a Mitchell transmission.

Or, install a later model transmitter such a '38 or '39.

I've got to ask Patrick L - Why do you use the term transmitter instead of transmission in various posts on this forum. I thought it might be a term used in other countries, but notice you are in the good 'ole USA. I'm just an inquiring mind trying to learn something new.... : )

Mitchel doesn't sell kits. They may update one you have but it may not work that way with them. A person could try and contact them and inquire about what they offer. They developed the parts so they control all that. It likely was not easy to develop those parts.

I don't understand the need for syncros. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to learn the timing to shift without grinding gears. I only use the clutch for starting and stopping. All shifting is done without using the clutch. But then I am 77 years old and have been driving stick shifts all my driving life.
I am putting a '39 trans in my A. Not for syncro shifting but to hold up under the 85 HP my engine is putting out. I didn't want to subject that little A gear box to more than double the HP it was designed to take.

While your first sentence is right, please don't encourage others to shift without using the clutch. Every time I read about this practice (no matter if it's a bike or a car) I cringe.

But I guess only God knows why some people feel the need to shift without using the clutch...

No special reason, just to be different I guess. It transmits power. When the hood is open [on a normal vehicle] I usually call it the mouth.

The model A transmission with it's straight cut gears and lack of synchonisers isn't much weaker that the model B transmission. It's just more of a challenge to shift. Learning to throttle up and match rpms for a downshift to 2nd takes experimentation to get done with minimal gear grinding. It works the same way with upshifting but it can be more difficult to slow the transmission gears down for upshifting unless a person double clutches. When upshifting there is no way to know by ear how fast the 2nd gear is turning when shifting from 1st to second. 2nd to high is a bit more predictable since the 2nd gear is dogging onto the input shaft and a person can hear how fast the engine is turning that shaft.

Do people experience grinding when going from 1st to 2nd? That’s never happened to me and I’m terrible at shifting.

I agree with y'alls, no need for synchros. The only reason I would concider a Mitchell or othe transmission is the change the gear ratios, especially between second and third. Big reason I installed a Mitchell O/D, so I could split gears.

I thought maybe a spell check thing , sometimes automotive terms are “corrected” by spellcheck.

Thanks. That's why I asked politely....didn't want to insult you in case it wasn't 'in jest' or just to be 'different'.

I learned to drive on a Model A so using the non synchro transmission is second nature to me. The only trouble you can get into is if you miss a down shift when you really need it like going down a steep grade. Then it is really nice to have the synchro transmission, or three feet.

Depends on how you change gears. If you change slow enough it won't grind. If you want / need to change the gears fast, it will most likely grind.

I've come to use specific points for up- and downshifting that work best for my car, for example ~ 18 to 20 mph from 3rd to 2nd. 9 out of 10 times the gearchange is completely silent at this speed.

It's just that I match the engine speed best around that speed.

It is simply habit for me. It is how I was taught to drive Big Rigs back in the early '60's. It saves clutch wear. It isn't difficult. You don't jam it into gear. Simply ease it in.
You either have the talent and coordination to do it or you don't.
