Transmission goes 'boing'
Hi gents and others.. for decades my transmission has gone boing when changing direction especially to reverse. It happens when the clutch is released. A friend's truck does the same thing.
I've recently rebuilt the gearbox but it still does it. Can't tell if it's coming from the diff or gearbox. Any ideas anyone? Regards Kevin |

Re: Transmission goes 'boing'
Kevin, I have a non-Ford car that had a squeak like noise that turned out to be the splined connection between the axle and a universal joint. I am thinking your noise might be the splined connector between the drive shaft and the pinion shaft at the differential. There was a picture on here not very long ago that showed excessive wear on a splined coupling. Good luck with your search.

Re: Transmission goes 'boing'
Interesting.. there is a splined connection from the tail shaft of the gearbox to the universal. I think that coupling is lubed from the gearbox. I might change the gearbox oil from ep90 to 600 and pack the universal's internal spline with a hard grease.
Thank you for your feedback. |

Re: Transmission goes 'boing'
Is "boing" a tech term?? Maybe you can explain in more detail what is happening. Did you rebuild the shift mechanism? Is the transmission jumping out of gear?
Do NOT use 600 in your transmission. You can use 0-0 in the U-joint housing about 6 OZ. The U-joint does need lubrication, but it does not get it through the rear bearing. You can add lube through the speedometer turtle by removing from the torque tube. |

Re: Transmission goes 'boing'
Hi Terry.. I installed new bearings, synchro cones, good synchro sleeve and replaced 2nd gear. Selectors are the same. It used to jump out of 2nd but not any more.
The boing noise sounds more like a bell. Only does it when changing direction. It did it before the rebuild.. |
