37 Engine?
Please excuse my ignorance, but is there ny way of telling from these (lousy) pictures if this engine is correct for a 1937 car?
It is obviously missing it's original generator, but I have no idea what else could be wrong and if it could be correct for a 37 or if it's earlier or later. This are the only pictures I have, sorry Thanks Henry Last edited by hdc; 09-03-2017 at 11:50 AM. Reason: Add signature |

Re: 37 Engine?
No, that engine is 1948 or newer.

Re: 37 Engine?
I'm sure you meant 1938 or newer. My bad, obviously 8BA style, so 1948 and newer is correct. Need to check my eyes.

Re: 37 Engine?
No, that thing is obviously from the 8BA series; 48'-'53 in trucks and '49-'53 ('54 in Canada) in cars. The water outlets on the front of the cylinder heads, "post" style distributor, and oil fill tube are dead giveaways. It is correct for a '37 if you're building a Hot Rod.

Re: 37 Engine?
Thanks, it is clearly an 8BA, the stamp can be seen in the pictures.
Having established that, the second question is how much would that deter from the value of the car (a club convertible)? And how easy would it be to find a correct 1937 engine? Thanks again |

Re: 37 Engine?
A few pictures of the car (lousy again, I apologise)
Wood looks poorly painted and interior is ugly IMHO in white, but it is otherwise a nice car |

Re: 37 Engine?
It has an 8CM head on one side and an 8BA head on the other. Kind of a hodgepodge of 8BA family parts. It's not uncommon to find the later engines in the early cars. There are more 8BA family engines available than 1937 Ford 21 stud pump in block engines. If you want OEM the 21 head studs and water pumps in the block are the ones to look for. They are out there but not as easy to find as the much later 8BA types.
From the photos, it looks to be a pretty nice example of a 37 convertible coupe. It's had some changes and likely missing a part or two but not a bad start. |

Re: 37 Engine?
The correct engine for your car is as mentioned a 21 stud with water pumps in block. In the US they were used in 37 and early 38 only. Don`t know about foreign market.

[please straighten out the V8 emblem on the grille; it stands out like big zit on a beautiful girls face![/QUOTE]
Isn't the grill ornament "sort of" in the correct position, in that it is diagonal. Yes, it is also on top of the center molding. (I'm not up on my 37s'.)

Re: 37 Engine?
The pump in block 21 studders are much more prevalent this side of the pond. military production, trucks, plus the post war Pilot all used them. I have one in my 33 coupe.
You could retrofit that 8BA with some centre outlet heads. Ok, it would still be 24 studs and not correct, but at a casual glance it would bear at least a similarity to the original motor. Mart. |

Re: 37 Engine?
You definitely have a hodge-podge of parts on the engine, 1 Mercury head, 1 8BA head, what appears to be a Mercury intake with an adapter for the carb. You could possibly have a Mercury 255CI block with a 4 in crank...to find out exactly what you have, you most likely would have to take some measurements or do some disassembly, which if engine runs good, you do not want anything to do with disassembly.

Re: 37 Engine?
That's a beautiful car and apparently it's new to you. If it were me (as my dad would say), I wouldn't start "picking pepper from knat shit" just yet. If it runs and drives, take care of the basics...fuel system, ignition, brake system and freshen up all the fluids. Enjoy the car and if you're wanting it to be back to "correct" do it a little at a time. I've seen too many times a well intentioned person tear into a project...car, plane, boat...etc and then have to sell boxes of parts when the dream didn't quite come true. Drive and enjoy!!
