Default Cab and Bed mounting wood

I just picked up cab and bed mounting wood.

This stuff is on the pricey side for what it is, I would like to preserve it.

What have others done, stain it? Polyurethane? Paint?

Did Ford treat it from the factory in any way?

Thanks in advance.

If what you had purchased is hard wood as was the authentic, it's likely to outlast you (sorry) without any treatment.
Ford dipped the wood in a mixture of chemicals (oils mostly) that somewhat saturated the wood leaving a dull black finish.
Those of us doing high quality restorations typically stain the wood. I prefer Minwax Ebony Black - two coats. That process mimics the factory appearance quite well and I suppose offers a degree of protection.

Mike,

Surprise, surprise, I also use MINWAX Ebony 2713 Wood Finish. It stains and seals the wood which will stay looking good long after I'm gone.

Linseed oil is pretty good . No one is ever going to see it. So it doesn't matter what it looks like.

Never see it? It's very noticeable - especially on a truck.

Mike you are a different animal. From my understanding he is talking about the bed and cab mounting wood. Not the bed planks. Which would be covered with sheet metal till 39. So unless someone was under your truck judging the color of the stain. Wood oil is wood oil. You said yourself ford used some sort of oil. That is your preference of oil and tint, not sure that is an accurate ford color. But I do not know, but I'd guess they didn't do much outside of putting oil on it and a bit of tar creosote like railroad ties.

No doubt Mike you make a ford you can eat cake off of. immaculate and beautiful.

Thanks All, I think I'm going to use Tung Oil. I like the properties of it, and as most have said, you'll never see it anyway. I will also look into the ebony stain! As I said before I'm new to this era of Ford. This is not a nut and bolt resto by any means. This is a west coast survivor truck, that I'll clean up and shine up as it sits. All of your help is appreciated! It looks like Tung oil has a great penetrating preservative, remains water tight, and should last. Yeah, I'm sure the wood will outlast me!

I hated having to do this to my 38 truck. But it was well shot to poop. I took a lot of pictures though.

There's no floor in mine to remove. That's been long gone. It's just a sheet of plywood on the rails.

At least in '40, the wood, all of it, is visible beneath the truck.

It is a fact that whatever Ford used, it turned the wood black.

The cab and bed mounting wood is certainly visible. The cab mounting wood is tricky to make with the finger joints and the turned angles as it follows the frame. Made in hardwood correctly would be a bit pricey if you don't make it yourself (not easy). We all use MinWax ebony stain because Roy (RIP) told us to. We are not talking about the bed boards, the question was mounting wood. The bed is fairly easy to make, straight cuts with blocks attached.

Shampe I noticed your working on a 39 from other posts...I ran into this with my 39 peekup.

There were some changes mid 39 to the cabs so with out comparison cab mounting wood you have a 50/50 chance there will be a problem with installation. Good luck and let us know how youmake out.

Thanks, I sure will. I'm in the process of setting up for winter projects. I have the 39 pickup to finish. I just sold my 49 parts car. I have a 50 shoebox to patch up and stuff new interior into. I'm also completing a Mustang coupe to Fastback conversion. A busy winter it shall be! This is a great group and I'm happy to get decent advice from those that have been there. I'm no stranger to building cars, as I've been at it most of my life. But these flatheads have captured my attention!

I used MINWAX Ebony as well on my bed wood. The original wood was "tongue and grove" bird's eye maple. About 15 inches up front close to cab was rotten. So I replaced all the wood.

Man you guy's in Mich are early risers

Yes with that cab wood depending on the time built it would be 38/39 or in my case 39/40 had some different slash cuts where some supports where added.

I had a thread with pictures several years ago and might help you along with your project.

My vehicle progression is actually the oposite 77 F150 then 39 peekup and after a trip to Dearborn and the Henry Ford ect. got hooked on the Model T's.

Some great folks here on Fordbarn...and if the Kube post's, take notes.

It's all visible under a 38 too. I've only had one guy at a show crawl under my truck to look at my mitchell overdrive. I don't go to a lot of shows either though. I probably should have started with a better truck. But it was a family vehicle.

I ordered quite a few bolts from Roy for my 36-38. He was fun to talk to. He had no issue just talking about flatheads or helping you. If he didn't have it, he'd lead you into the right direct. Last we talked about was the long tapered 38 square head bed bolts. He said they were not made by anyone.

I have also used the Min-Wax ebony black. Penetrates and seals and matched the color of the old original wood.
