1932-1934 4 cylinder questions
I posted this on the early v8 forums.
I am working on a 1933 pickup with a 4 cylinder. The big water jacket above the water inlet on the side of the motor has been welded shut and machined flat. With the letter F stamped in it The old head gasket has the water hole in it. The new gasket is solid without a hole Any idea why it would be welded shut? Besides an old overhead conversion? And why the new gasket has no hole in it? I am thinking of re drilling the block and gasket to let the water go through like original Or is this original or a modification to the block? |

Re: 1932-1934 4 cylinder questions
There is no hole in that location on the B engine block. There is a hole on the head side for casting reasons – it helps get the sand out, or something like that. The corresponding surface on the block side tends to erode over time, especially if there's a hole in the head gasket. Looks to me like someone welded up the eroded area and machined it flat again.

Leave it as-is.

Re: 1932-1934 4 cylinder questions
Here are pictures of a stock Model B short block. This engine was built after 1934 by a non-Ford casting house as evidenced by the "Diamond" casting mark on the block. Jim Brierley is correct, do not drill a hole because there was no hole there originally.

Re: 1932-1934 4 cylinder questions
Looks like someone got creative in dealing with a rear main leak on that engine by adding extra drain plumbing.

Re: 1932-1934 4 cylinder questions
The rear main is funny. It is a farmers idea to cope with oil leakage. This engine came out of a tractor. The extra drain failed to make a difference.
