Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck
Folks,
Had a chance to look in Newc's thread on his pickup truck. He is doing a great job bringing that truck back to original stock condition including a spare babbited engine. I am impressed! So after a day off and some rest We are ready to get back at doing something. At least getting caught up. I am glad I bulled ahead and completed the work on my vintage turn signal system. here is the part that John R gave to me. I believe it is a Bendix air valve: Its a neat old piece, Hope I can find someone that needs it? Maybe my friend Matt, Or someone at the steam show, or my machinist guy who has lots of big old stuff too! Here is a look at some of John's cars: The Merc: He said he put a older coil on it when the engine work was completed: his 1916 Olds: John R and his speedster: 39 Ford: The cabriolet: Off to get in trouble some how. Humm roads are almost dry enough to take the 32 for a little road trip. I need to try to get some quick videos of it with the lights working. Have a great day! Regards, Chris

Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck
Your air device is know as the "Johnson bar". Thats to manually apply brakes to the trailer only on semi trucks. Used in slippery road conditions to try and help you from "jack knifing" the rig. All big trucks had them, yours is pretty old I would guess

Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck
Up here it's refereed to as the "squawl handle" (not sure where the term came from), & a "Johnson bar" was the mechanical clutch lever on the old Caterpillar dozers before the power shift transmissions were used.

Cas3, outlaw,
Thanks on the air control system valve. I did get some short videos that I plan to try to post soon on the turn signals and some gear jamming! So what year is the Merc?? I would drive that! Regards, Chris

Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck
Chris, for your horn resistor an approx .5 ohms wire wound is required. Macs and others sell a wire resistor for horns. For my 6 volt motor driven horn running on 12 volts I used the wire resistor off the bottom of an old 6 volt VW beetle voltage regulator and removed a few turns off it until the horn motor speed was correct. You could even try an old flathead ford V8 ignition coil resistor which is rated at .5 ohms. Most modern coil resistors have a too high ohms to be any good for your application. Have fun, Regards, Kevin.

Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck
Kevin, David, Mark,
I ordered a resistor but not sure it is .5 ohms? I will try to check that out, or maybe I will check with Mac or Snyders on that also. Good idea. The 51 is pretty sweet. Think I will go find the ragged ol' truck song! Worked on window trim in the shop last night. Ordered more trim to complete the loft area someday. Picked out some galvanized standing rib steel panels for the loft ceiling. Also may order more 6 inch wide hemlock from local Amish mill to complete the side walls of that area. Regards, Chris

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2WJYX5nlTSc. There’s a commercial at the beginning. It hasn’t got a lot to do with old trucks but I like the chorus.......Mark

Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck
Mark,
i would haul myself into town if my ragged ol truck didnt use a pint of oil going down. And on the way back just about the same kinda jack! need to call to see what can be done on evaluation of engine number one. No reason I need to wait till spring. I have a warm shop to work on that thing! Then haul myself into town! Just joined our local AACA club tonight. Some folks still hanging in there from 30 years ago when I stopped going, after I had sold my last car (1955 Ford Crown Vic) They are plannig a Car show early June 2022. I would like to take the 32 with a improved banger in it! Got to get moving! Hope things are good! Cooper and I are going to be doing wood working in the shop tomorrow. Here is a small clip of me jammin gears in the 32. https://youtu.be/uQKTh4jag98 on the blinkers: https://youtu.be/hWN5CJYTglM Regards, Chris

Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck
Pat, ford folks,
I did get the AH-OOG-HA horn operational. The dropping resistor from snyder's, ny-rex di the job. Good instructions too! Had the dump truck out in the snow. Will try to get a clip of that loaded. Our internet has to be trucked in and out of our town for processing. Spent a couple hours in the deer stand this evening. The last day of early archery season. Had 5 deer pass by me at the end of the day. Two bucks. Had the safety off. Just could not be sure of point count on the last one. Well I don't have to skin one tonight! Sure felt good to get some fresh air, several good naps, and time in the woods. Seeing several deer was a bonus. Have hunted many days and not seen a tail! A friend is going to bring a pipe vice over tomorrow. He is the guy that gave me the nice old truck jack. Coffee and visiting will be in order for sure. Hope things are good in Ford land! With the he shop windows trimmed in the ash from our property, I will move back to some hemlock wall covering in the loft next week. All the toys (tractors and trucks) are in the shop. We had several inches of snow last night. Regards, Chris

Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck
Folks,
Try to get some pictures in here to give you some updates. Turn signal switch in position and functional. Just need to remember to turn it off after turning! Was pleased I could use this item as it came with the truck. Had to be 70 years old. The voltage drop unit for the horn on the left: Remounted the spare again. Truck seems happier when this is in place: Just some shots outside today: Winter is here: Don't wait for a Christmas card from us. This is probably as close as your going to get! Several videos coming. Short, sweet, to the point! Regards, Chris

Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck
Several other items:
For some reason these seem to be blurry?? I need to take lessons from Mart! https://youtu.be/UXCLk0Gdup0 https://youtu.be/jggEdswxyFg The truck jack: Hopefully wont have to use it. But a nice working jack that went right in the truck tool box: Some shop shots of the window trim details, doesn't look like much when in place, but seemed to take some time to get the ash boards whittled to fit. Thanks to several neighbors for working this lumber into the right shape and size. Several boards were left over and I have small projects in mind for those too: Thanks for checking on me. Folks: Looking for a 42, to 48 Flathead V8 for my friend John K. for his new potential 1942 Ford project. I need to get over there and lay eyes on this car! Anyway he is missing an engine. If you know of one, let me know and I will get the details to him. Regards, Chris

Beautiful shop trim details Chris. BRRRRRRRRRR get that old truck inside out of the cold! She looks ready to help out on the farm come springtime. I certainly hope you get to enjoy a nice Thanksgiving feast with your family next week.

Chris,
Please do not crawl under your truck when using that old jack; it's nice to have it, but as a conversation piece, not as a tool to be relied on. |

Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck
Ai,
David, Folks, Thanks on the shop, its coming along. Hope everyone's Thanksgiving is Festive with family and friends too! Yes, the jack will be a conversation piece for sure! Rather spindly base to support a large truck! Just received a Yost #51 pipe vice for the tailgate of the 32. I will need to drill two new holes since the original set of three holes must have been for 3 inch pipe, the next size larger. Yost tools were made in Meadville PA. about 30 miles form here. So it matches the story of the local well drilling truck. Regards, Chris

Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck
Folks,
So I have been looking at pipe vices. The one that friend paul B. Gave me is slightly smaller. But I like it. So my plan is to mount it on the left side of the tail gate. If I find one that fits the bolt pattern on the right side, might have two. This just add to the story of the trucks working life. Regards, Chris

Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck
That vise looks like it belongs on the truck. Perfect the way it is.
Not sure if mounting it in the other direction would make it more user friendly. Try it both ways. |
