Transmission Main Shaft Spacer Ring
My son and I took our transmission apart today and did not see this piece. I checked Snyder’s site and could not find it. I then checked Brattons, but there were three possible items it could be: part number 10270 (I think it is this one), p/n 10240, and p/n 10210. If it is 10270–weird part to put there, but OK…. Where do the other pieces go 10240 and 10210?

Re: Transmission Main Shaft Spacer Ring
What year? I believe some early transmissions didn’t have it. Tom Endy has a good article explaining the differences. Mine did not have one. When I tried to add prior to discovering this it would cause the trans to bind when reassembled.

Re: Transmission Main Shaft Spacer Ring
BTerry—Interesting note, this car is a March 1930 build, if we are assuming it has the original transmission. I do know that it does NOT have the brass thrust washer as the early transmissions had, so I was figuring it was either original or at least not an early transmission. Any idea where to get the Tom Endy article on this?

Re: Transmission Main Shaft Spacer Ring
Thank you Tom! It appears the spacer is needed if the splines go all the way on the shaft to the reduced area where the bearing rides. If the splines stop short of the bearing race, and there is a short gap no spacer is required. I enjoyed reading your well documented article—thanks again!
Update: and after inspecting, I need to get the spacer.

Re: Transmission Main Shaft Spacer Ring
I bought and installed the spacer, then…locked up! I took it apart and removed the spacer, it works again. Figures…

Re: Transmission Main Shaft Spacer Ring
Some main shafts have a spacer "built in". It is actually more of a precision "collar" that may actually be a separate piece or an "extension" on the shaft in front of the splined area. Don't forget, these cars are 90+ years old and previous to the production of "Repro" parts that have been around for 50+ years, aftermarket gears and shafts were available from sources other than Ford dealers. You appear to have the main shaft with this "built in" spacer.
