Default Popout ignition switchs

Greetings all,

Is there an online resource which shows all the different types of popout switches used in the Model A's over the years?

Thanks.

I would check out the Model A Restoration Guidelines and Judging Standards. Available both from MARC and MAFCA Good Luck

Not on line, but see the Restorer, Mar-Apr 1992, or Vol 5 of How to Restore Your Model A in which the same article appears.

Is this even an original? The end that should go into the distributor doesn't look right to me.

Also, the dash end is also not shaped correctly. I think.

Hi 28,

If looking for one particular type of switch for one type/year Model A, Mr. Dick Crabtree would be one of the best sources to try under "Search".

It's not Model A but I don't know what it fits.

Electrolock made armored switches for many Marques in the 20’s and 30’s. One of the patented anti-theft features common to all was the grounding of the ignition system when the switch was locked. The inventor was Wilson Hemmingway, Jr. of Philadelphia, Pa. as assignor to Electrolock Manufacturing Co., Vicksburg, Mississippi. Multiple patents beginning 1924 for ignition switch design appear under his name.

The 30/31 Ford used the model 12A Electrolock, I'm not sure of Electrolock's model numbers for earlier Ford iterations. Some of the Electrolocks made for other marques used three, five, or seven wires to also control other functions. Not all accomplished the grounding feature with a pop-out cylinder design, but many used some form of spring armored wire for a critical run function to enhance anti-theft properties.

What I learned by searching for a key to my pop out switch (yep that's right I lost my only key with no spare !!);
1) I thought I had an original pop out switch. Turns out it was not original. Many originals have been replaced over the years. Originals will have the key numbers printed on the cylinder beginning with a part number Axxxxxx. If you have an original pop out and a key number, a new key can be made for it;
2) there was a repro part made in Spain, key blanks very hard to find. If it was made in Spain it will say so on the backside of the switch;
3) another repro was generally in circulation in the 1950's through '70's. This was manufactured in the U.S. There were 9 different keys for this switch, and a number 1 through 9 was stamped into the face of the lock and readily visible.Key blanks can be found for this pop out;
4) do as suggested by H L Chauvin. Call Dick Crabtree. He is the guru of pop out switches.
