Default Upside down valves

My neighbor, who actually worked as a auto mechanic before his current career in the petrochemical industry, was checking out my A and noticed the counterbalanced engine project in my garage. We were talking about the engine and somewhere in the conversation he referred to the valves as upside down. I responded yea like a four cylinder lawn mower. After thinking about it for a minute, to him they are upside down. Even a lot of mowers are OHV now.

Since I grew up with Model A's and Ford Flatheads, my Dad's '56 Fairlane had "upside down" valves. (and those funny things on top that looked like a row of oil wells)

Upside down is any configuration that makes valve LIFT go down, not up. When an OHV breaks a retainer and the valve falls into the cylinder is that lift? So who is upside down?

Saw a strange OHV V-8 at a hillclimb in Britain. NO valve covers, pushrods had a clevis & was hooked to LONG rocker arms with a pin & cotter key! Sounded FEROCIOUS, to say the least. A friend has a ' 23 Chev, no valve cover & he oils the rockers with a squirt can, before each trip. His '26 Chev has a valve cover & an oil soaked felt pad, to lube the rockers & it has NO side cover, BUT, it had enough power to DESTROY a wooden wheel, during a "U" turn.

You have a four CYLINDER lawn mower?? That must really cut the grass (and bushes, trees, etc.)
