Hi,
Looking at a simple process to clean out bottom of transmission without removing.
Everything thing looks good and in working order.
I read using kerosene or would it be easier to just refill and drive and drain and refill again ?

I think it depends how old the oil was.

Steve, if you are wanting everything to remain in good working order, I would refrain from the thought of refilling with Kerosene and driving it. Drain the lube now, fill with a degreaser a little more 'potent' than Kerosene, and then flush concentrating on the bottom of the case and not the bearings. Aerosol Brake Cleaner with the tube on the nozzle is also good to use for stubborn areas.

Given what you have said, I would be inclines to simply drain it overnight, put the plug back in, and refill it. Don't overthink it.

Are you thinking about removing the transmitter cover or just draining it ?

If removing the cover then brushing and spraying the insides should work fine.

If just just draining, then I don't have any issue with filling with kerosene/diesel and running the car for awhile on jack stands.

But, also, just draining over night and filling should also be fine.

Thoroughly confusing isn't it.

Then just fill with a 140 or 250 wgt. Many like to use the 600W that the venders sell which to my knowledge is 140 with some STP added. I'm not a big fan of STP. I don't see much difference between using either the 140 or 250.

The gear oil in transmission looked pretty bad drained out overnight
Added small amount of degreaser let sit a bit then drained that then went ahead and sprayed some brake cleaner on all the sludge on gears evaporates pretty fast l also put a fan over housing to dry it out. Just a note, l removed the clutch housing and main gear before the process.

Upon recommendation of the late Roger Kauffman (longtime MARC tech advisor), I have run straight STP in transmissions, differentials and steering boxes for 15-20 years with no problems.

Used Mitchell's recommended oil in Mitchell overdrives.

I would never run straight STP. Believe it or not it does not have friction property as you’d think. It is a viscosity enhancer; changes viscosity of what it’s added to.
Make your own lube as below; better than purchased 600w
If you live in a colder climate, I’d keep it a bit thinner or cold weather shifting could be really stiff.

When it comes to transmission lubricant, anything is better than nothing but I tend to think that good common sense will dictate that what Ford intended to be in there or its modern equivalent, is likely the best thing to use. Any SAE 140 gear lube with a GL1 or GL4 additive package will work
