Default overdrive

If you initially fill the OD and trans with oil will the oil move between the two so it is possible to just check the trans. The car is a 53. Thanks

Yes.....there are passages for the oil to pass through. To expedite filling a totally empty trans, fill each side through its own filler plug. Let it sit overnight (in a level position) and recheck the next day. After filling, do your checking AND topping off through the main gearbox fill plug on the passenger side of the 3 speed part of the transmission. This will keep both sides filled. Keep a closer eye on your gear oil levels with an overdrive transmission.....the OD planetary gears will run dry before the rest of the transmission will, and that's a costly repair.

I'll add this in here as I feel it is germane to the conversation. I have heard that the way to initially test an overdrive is to move the "lockout" lever to the "overdrive" position (free-wheeling), put the transmission on gear, and while holding the input shaft stationary, turning the output shaft The output shaft should turn one way, but not the other. If it doesn't turn, the overdrive is probably toast; is this correct?
