Default 47 merc steering wheel install

removed my steering wheel & repaired cracks, and primed it.Years later,I finally painted it,and tried to reinstall it.I tightened the nut,and started to rotate it,and saw that the bottom of the wheel rubbed the cup area onthe top of the steering column.with the wheel,I had a ribbed plastic ring, and a small(3/8" diameter plastic knob same color as dash knobs.I don't know if they belong with wheel,or where they fit.I'm wondering why the wheel went on too far on the tapered shaft.I'm still trying to figure how to post a picture.I could e-mail the picture somewhere.

It sounds like the problem I had. Rebuilding the steering boxI didn't find out until the column was back in car. What I found out my knuckles were hitting the shift lever.
So what I found out the shaft was shorter witch led to the problem you have.

Thanks George, but nothing was touched in steering box,or steering column.I only removed steering wheel, and later tried to reinstall it,and found it rubbing on the cup shaped part of the column, directly beneath the wheel.thanks for the response.

If you use the "Go Advanced" button on the post reply you will get a pop-up screen with a "manage attachments" button down in the options. Click that and the next pop-up will have places to attach picture (jpg files) you then just attach your document the same as an e-mail attachment straight from your computer's document files.
