Rebuilding Carburetor

Rebuilding a side bowl carburetor, and the lower body is giving me trouble. Both the Cap jet and the main jet(which broke off) are not coming out easily. I decided to add a little heat to see if I could loosen them up(no luck). While I was putting the torch to the body I notices flames shooting out of what seemed to be a small hole below the GAV in the casting of the lower body. Has anyone else experienced this? When the casing cooled down I could not see where the hole was. I put some penetrating oil in the passages and the oil did not find its way out. Wondering if I should find another lower body or if this one is still okay. Thoughts would be great.

Picture might clarify. Should not have a leak if the plug for the clean out passage is intact.

I use a propane torch to heat the casting next to the jet, then run cold water over it. This will shock it loose, and I've never had the casting crack.

I fully agree with Tom But i use a hotter torch! Hit with cold water! Always works for me!

Thank you all for the replies. Unfortunately I am unable to post photos on this site. Even if I could I would be unable, because I am working by myself the only time I could see the hole was when I was applying heat and I need both hands to do that.



I am going to go back at it today to see if it was just my imagination or if flames were shooting out. There is no crack in the casting it looked like I blew a small hole out, but I couldn't find the hole when cool nor did penetrating oil come out of any hole, puzzling.



This carburetor had been worked on before I acquired it and the slot for the screwdriver was damaged so I was using an easy out. I think I am down to drilling and tap.

Hmmmm. Consider letting a machinist do it. I know we all hate to hear that, but if you want to save what you have you may be better off. I used to work on equipment. sometimes we spent a few minutes with it, if no luck we took it to the machine shop. Smity got so he told us "hey, I know you mean well, but when you guys mess with it, it just makes my job harder".

Just be sure to tell him those are not standard threads in there. That way he won't chase the threads wrong.

The small hole might have just been a small pocket in the casting that doesn't go through but was filled with hardened grease. They can shoot flames out for a bit when heated.

I wish there still was machine shops near where I live. I know of five that have closed over the years. The ones that exist today are all specialized computer based, working with new stock. From the outside they look like an office building. I am sure machine shops still exist somewhere.


I will go slow drilling carefully and just chasing out the threads with the tap.

Just did the same thing on a carburetor. Broke off the cap jet, luckily I have a real small easy out, the spiral kind. Warmed it up quenched it and was able to screw the remaining piece out with the easy out by hand.

What is being used to paint the carburetor?
Jets are out passages cleaned threads are also cleaned. Ready for painting

make sure you clean the bottom of where the secondary well is screwed into , were the idle jet goes into. it is deeper than the the well and sometimes fills with crud, the crud will suck into the cap jet (the tall one inside the ventury)which will give you a stalling issue.
