Default Transmission shifting problem

I just put my engine back in after it was reworked. The car sat for 6 months in humid weather here in Alabama. Now after putting the engine back in it won't shift into any gear without grinding the gears. I have adjusted the linkage up and down and it still won't shift. Before I remove the transmission from the rear any advice as to what may be causing this problem would be great. Thanks, Ron

Too high idle speed or too thin of lube. Generally speaking you can slide it into 3rd gear first and then quickly move it into 1st gear while stopped. Since you stated it won't go into any gear, this suggests the clutch disc is unable to release completely. My first step would be to see if you can start the engine with it into a gear and the clutch pedal depressed. Do this when engine has been warmed up. This should tell you if the clutch can be disengaged. Humidity really should not matter unless the flywheel clutch surface as become rusted.

You did not mention if the clutch or flywheel have been worked on during this time. If not, it is possible. The clutch disc is installed backwards.

What the others said.

I wouldn't worry much about the linkage adjustment, just set the free-play at 1-1.5".

You could remove the floorboards and inspection plate and take a look at what is going on, or, not going on. The disk may just be stuck to the wheel or plate.

Remove the little plate at the rear of the bell housing and with a mirror and a flash light look to see if the fork on the clutch release shaft is correctly seated against the ears of the housing that mounts the throw-out bearing.

If it is not, reach in with a long screwdriver and worry it into place.
