1928 model a speedometer
Hi, I recently bought a speedometer cable for my 1928 model A and it did not fit. It came with a male connector on one end and a female connector on the other. The connection on the back of the speedometer is male as well as the connection on the transmission. Is there such a cable with female connectors on both ends?

Re: 1928 model a speedometer
That would be a Northeast speedometer I believe, it's an oddball and I don't think
new cables are available. Bob |

Was the Northeast speedometer an oval one?

Re: 1928 model a speedometer
Northeast made both, but yes from December '29 until June 30 it would have been oval.
Up until April 1929 an oval Stewart Warner would have been installed. The cable for the 1928-30 Oval Speedo, speedo end was square, the drive end was keyed and round.

Re: 1928 model a speedometer
I never heard of such a thing as both ends being female. In fact every cable I know has male fittings on both ends.

Re: 1928 model a speedometer
No Sir. The one Mac's Auto Parts sent me had one male end and one female end on the housing. My situation is that I have male threaded ends both at the back of the speedometer as well as where it connects to the gear case on the transmission.

Re: 1928 model a speedometer
I don't understand your description. You say the speedometer has "A male connector on one end and a female connector on the other". The speedo itself only has one connection point where the cable joins. Are you talking about the cable or the cable housing? I looked at Mac's catalog and the cable and housing they offer is the standard Model A unit. Could you post pix of your speedo and your connection at the u-joint? (Make sure they are jpegs and less than 500k.)

OK, that's where I was lost also. I thought you were talking about the cable, not the housing.

Re: 1928 model a speedometer
So has anyone seen a cable housing with two female connectors for this vehicle?

Re: 1928 model a speedometer
Is this the speedometer you have, notice it does not have a trip meter.
It is fairly rare as they only used it for about 6 months. The cables with both ends female show up on epay once in awhile, you might try papanick see if he has one Leonard Nichols (315) 287-1723. Bob |

Re: 1928 model a speedometer
What is wrong with your original cable housing? Bert's may have a used housing.

Re: 1928 model a speedometer
Here's the 1928-9 housing I bought from Bert's when I stopped there years ago. It has the common male and female ends. I wasn't aware there was another style of speedometer cable housing.

Re: 1928 model a speedometer
That's the one I bought and returned. I have a male thread at the speedometer as well as a male thread at the gear case on the transmission.

Re: 1928 model a speedometer
Actually that speedometer is not correct for a 1928. According to the restoration guidelines it was only used from Dec.1929 to June 1930. It might be easier to get
a Stewart-Warner speedometer. Bob |

Yes, but they are very hard to find. Bob C. has the right answer for you.

Re: 1928 model a speedometer
Hay You do have a N/E oval there were used in the AA ford trucks. Let me know if you would need a S/W oval. I have them all set to go. Email [email protected].

Re: 1928 model a speedometer
Most of the parts suppliers sell rebuit speedometers but require exchange of the old one. Do you know if anyone would accept this one in exchange for a Stewart Warner?

Re: 1928 model a speedometer
Why don't you ask them? You have Papanick's email, and Harry Warburton also does good work.
