Default AA Truck wheels question

The all steel (not spoked) wheel has the centre attached to the rim by 16 rivets . Water gets in the wheel and over the years the interior of the rim gets very rusty. Just got to thinking this could compromise the attachment as the inside part of the rivet has diminished depth . I have some wheels that look OK on the outside but thought I could MIG weld the inner cicumference where the inner meets the outer to reinforce the join .This seems a safe option just wondered if anyone has done this ???
