Default leaking 32 water pumps

My 32 tall neck water pumps are leaking. According to Skip Haney per telephone, a major cause of this are cracks around the shaft, and if so, they can't be rebuilt. The guy who answers his email, however, says he wants to buy cracked water pumps. What gives with this ? Can they be rebuilt or not ? and how ?

Thanks, Dodge

Skip Haney really knows his stuff, so believe him. Cracks in the area of the impeller shaft will leak, as will worn or broken seals. These are often caused by excessive belt tightening. If you have the correct V belt, it doesn't need to be so tight that it can't show a small bit of flex. The cross section of the correct belt lets it grip the pulley. Ordinary belts often bottom in the pulley, allowing slip if not over tightened. As for pump leaking, put some Bar's leak in the cooling system. If it cures the leak, it is probable a replacement is required.

About 20% of the 32 to 36 pumps are cracked when skip rebuilds them.
I don't think he ever found the later pumps cracked. The crack normally
appears on the curved area on the front of the pump. These are welded
and ground and not visible after the repair. I suppose this came from
being frozen although as many as there are it could be from stress. He
missed a few and didn't show when tested but had a slight drip when
they got hot. One recently occurred on one of the 32 pumps shipped to
Denmark. Shipping each way is $60.00 plus over $60.00 duty. That's
$180.00 shipping and the extra duty is under review by their customs.
