There has been an ad for "battleship linoleum" in Old Cars Weekly for a long time. I always wondered what that stuff was and why he was advertising it.

Default battleship linoleum

Thanks Jeff & Jim I'll search the indicated paths

What I know on battleship linoleum and what I found

The Original stuff is brown ribbed 4mm, 5/32" thick

The closest replacement I found is produced by Armstrong, they carry two varieties in 3,2mm, 1/8" and 2mm,5/64" without groves but one of the available colours is very close.

Also received some samples from a Oregon based company SMS Auto Fabrics, they offer a very thin linoleum looking material with two backing material options, the 1mm, 3/64" overall thickness makes it difficult to reproduce the original 2mm,5/64" deep groves.
In fact this material has a ribbed structure which would fit in size but I'm looking for a better solution to frame up my seats with less tweaks.

If there' no better solution I would go for the thicker Armstrong material, laminate a backing material to compensate the required thickness for good fit in the seat framing and find someone able to cut accurate ribs in there.

Checked the Restoration Supply California site, the description of their Battleship Linoleum fits the Armstrong produced lino, it's not ribbed but it's the first Automotive related offer I saw

A pic says more than thousand words

Armstrong DLW samples 2,5mm front & backside with Ford '53 Colour chart
and the SMS material samples, second pic trying to show the differences in thickness

Was on the web for an hour this morning but did not find any better

Hello Mike

With the help I get here it makes it's easyer

With more info found in an other forum I'm conviced now the best solution for the batlleship linoleum is to go with the thicker Armstrong reference 3,2mm and to route the groves in it, some of the Armstrong references are easily available even in Europe, will post the further development here.

I love that you are restoring this car properly. I like the mainline 2 door wagons.

Wink Where to find original Paints, putties, etc.

Thanks Talkwrench & 38 coupe,

I knew when I stripped the car over 10 years ago, the rebuild to factory specs would be the most painfull option and the waste of time till now is mainly due to the search for parts, the shipping headaches for oversized or heavy stuff, can imagine the guy's at customs inspecting some of my shipments asking themselves what that rust could be good for

Still a ton of job left and there's no timeline set for the project, I can rely on the skills I learned during my apprenticeship in the seventies where I learned the profession as it was then still inspired by these early fifties cars, when we first learned to make the tools to do the job.

Also this car represents a form of industrial realisation where things were made to outlive the first consumer, a few years before management invented marketing and limited lifetime
The fact that almost all the products used in production had natural origins adds to the environmental aspect of the project.

In this regard I would be very pleased to get some hints where I can find Original Paints, body caulking, sealants etc.

have a nice sunday !

It's over five years I last posted here
Years flying by, the project got ahead but slowly, found battleship Linoleum from Armstrong, matching colour, slightly thinner than the original and I grooved it according to the original, now the quarter interior is waiting to be rebuilt.
Also had all the inner front sheet metal sandblasted and powdercoated black, am actually recovering all the parts from my various storage sites and trying to remember how the puzzle comes together
Lost my job two weeks ago, have the space and hope to keep energy and health to see the Ranch Wagon complete and running again.

Hope all Ford Barn members are well and healthy thru those strange times

will post a few pics from the progress soon

Neat car Walter, good luck on the continuing project. Love the early OHV sixes. I had a 55 Customline with Miliage Maker, I Block, 6 and drove it across the U S A In 1964....it never missed a lick. You will have a very nice car when done.

Thanks Will & Mike,

I'm actually two and a half years from pension age, with the actual pandemy situation I'll go for an early pension and try to finish all the stuff I collected or took apart in the last years have a pair of triple 2 stroke '70 Kawasakis and a Lancia Fulvia 1.6HF with rally rash.

The Mileage Maker 6 is a very nice engine , I drove the Ranch Wagon for a few years between the eighties and 2000 when I took it apart, I expect it to run as well as it did back then.

A few pics to show where we are, believe I precised already the the restoration includes the exhaustive rebuild of the quarter windows and interior.

Walter You could try Restoration Supply Company in California,
They tend to deal more in Veteran stuff but many of those cars had running boards covered in Battleship Lineolum -all the best -Karl

Thank You Karl, I'll try to check Restoration Supply Company in California,

Uploaded a few pics of the actual job, all the black sheetmetal parts where sandblasted and powdercoated, they basically look like new and no visible rust damage, the challenge now is to find /clean /organise all the bolts and screws to set the puzzle together.
Any advice where I can find caged U-Nuts and the original Bolts ? Most of it is reusable but I'll need a few,

Will try to give a weekly update here and I'm grateful for advices and suggestions

Walter

Great to see the update, sorry to hear you lost your job. I have had great luck with my 215. You probably know this already, but the picture with your exhaust pipe indicates you have the less common correct 215 exhaust manifold with the straight down outlet.
