39 std headlight switch and wiring
Got a '39 standard coupe that has been in storage since 1961. Headlights don't work and no voltage at the sockets. There is a lot of dirt packed around the steering box. I would like to know if the wires just plug on to something at the end of the steering column or what to expect when I start to remove the packed in dirt. How does the power source route from the battery to the headlight switch?

This is what you're looking at. You can remove the switch assembly by pushing up on the u shaped piece and removing the c clip. Hope this helps!

Re: 39 std headlight switch and wiring
As Dick said, merely remove the bail wire and the switch assembly will come off the end of the steering box. No need to remove the clip, spring and item with the tabs. After you have the switch out, you can turn and release it as Dick has shown. Clean all the junk (probably grease, oil and dirt) from the contacts.
There are 2 power leads coming into the switch. Both are hot all the time. One is for lights and the other is for the horn. You can check to see if you have power to the switch with a meter. Center terminal is for the horn. One of the others is for lights. |

Re: 39 std headlight switch and wiring
Dick: Very helpful! I have a `39 Deluxe with the same problem minus some of the parts. I've noticed that Dennis Carpenter doesn't have the switch "box" and C&G doesn't have the bail. By any chance do you have a picture of the completed assembly installed?

E.J.,
Here are the pictures your requested. The tip of the light rod would extend down another 1/4" or so and would have the u shaped clip on it to activate the swith. Hope these help. |

Check the relay under the dash next to the ballest resistor.

Re: 39 std headlight switch and wiring
My 39 Standard is not like a Model "A". The switch on the steering wheel is for parking lights and driving lights. The high and low beams are controlled by a typical dimmer switch on the floor. Mine was in parts and pieces and it took a while to figure it out after working on a model"A".
The dash lights are controlled by a toggle type switch under the dash.
