8RT pumps place the wide belt pulley forward and have the motor mount tabs in the correct place for installing 8BA in older bodies. Zeke

The pickups & trucks mounted the engine to biscuit mounts like the earlier Ford cars & trucks so they had a protruding mount casting on the pump body. Ford passenger cars from 49 to 53 used angled recatangular mounting which extended downward on an angle from the pump body. In 53, the pickups were changed to use the same pumps & mounts as the cars did with narrow belts. Mercury cars used there own pump from 49 through 51. They were similar to the pickup but mounted lower in the frame so the protruding mount part of the casting is situated higher on the body of the pump casting.

Pretty sure that the '53 and '54 Ford and Merc trucks from Ford Canada continued the use of wide belts, but on pumps that appeared the same as an 8BA pump. ..B.

That's correct based on the info I have. The '53 US truck pumps were the same or very similar to the '49 wide belt car pumps.

It is somewhat of a mystery as to why Ford used a different style of water pump on the Merc's and Fords in '49-50, it is also a mystery as to why the Merc's use a bell housing with the same bolt pattern as the early Fords where-as the Ford cars are different.
As already mentioned, the Ford cars generally have narrow belts where-as the trucks generally have wide belts, however, this is not a hard fast rule. I have seen a lot of Ford trucks with narrow belts, the variations being within the same model year.
The first pix is a '50 Merc, the second a '49 Ford F3 and the third is a '52 Ford F5, unmolested grain truck with 43,k showing on the odometer.

The '49-'51 Mercurys are based on the Lincoln body/chassis, completely different from the '49-'51 Fords, and helps explain the water pump, oil pan and bell housing/transmission differences, among others.

1949 Ford cars and Mercurys used the 5/8" wide truck-style single belt system for both pumps and generator, with the second belt turning the fan. The pulleys have the same spacing from the block, and the crank pulley sheaves are the same size, and similar/same as the '48-'53 truck crank pulleys.

In '50, Fords and Mercs switched to the narrow 3/8" belts, with one belt for each pump and fan/generator. These pumps have one pulley spaced farther from the block than the other, and also use a cast crank pulley with two different sheave sizes.

The only '48-'53 truck pumps listed or seen in manuals, books etc. have the wide 5/8" sheaves. You may have seen narrow belts in trucks, but they weren't stock, and were probably the result of a car engine transplant, common for trucks when the original engines expired, because of the much larger supply of used car engines. Usually the truck assesories were retained on the car engine, but not always.

The above info is accurate to the best of my knowledge, but there could be rare exceptions here or in Canada/overseas.

You're second picture clearly shows 5/8" wide belt sheaves, and the third shows the wide belt and sheave.

blucar - On the picture of the 1952 F5, what is the device that looks like a sending unit mounted low and behind the first cylinder? Inquiring minds want to know. TIA
