Where do I start looking, 48 6 idle issues

F3 226/6 Ok so I installed the new/old rebuilt carb no more dead spot when pulling away from a stop, but I can not get the idle to level out. Right now it sounds ruff like the engine has a race cam. Adjusting the needle valve does not help. Having the air cleaner on or off no real change. The only time I can see a change is if I partly cover the top of the carb with my hand then it smooths out. With the air cleaner off, can hear fuel being sucked in the engine at idle. I have checked the manifold to block connection in the past year, no leaks. Ideas?

If youre covering the carb opening makes it smooth out, it is sucking too much air.
The sound you hear is probably just that, air being sucked in. This also means it's running lean as heck, not enough fuel. Sounds like the low speed jet/s are not clear thus not letting enough fuel through. You're may have to pull the carb apart and make sure you get all the jets cleared and use compressed air to blow through all the passages to make sure no debris got dislodged and stuck in one. With all that said, Seafoam is a product here that is great for dissolving varnish in carbs and clearing up just this sort of issue, if it's a varnish issue. I get it at any auto parts store. |

Get some carb cleaner in a spray can and spray around the base of carb and intake gaskets if engine smooths out you have found your vacuum leak. Dave

A Vacuum gauge is your friend...cheap and easy to use.

This is a rebuilt that sat on the shelf in it's box for a while. No varnish and inside was clean. Other then the idle, this carb sure runs better off the line. The other one did too after you pumped the pedal and got the RPM's up some.

I did the vacuum test the other day with original carb on. I know it needs a valve job, but it idled fine with that carb. With the needle bounce at this point I really don't know that help till the valves are done.

I suspect a dried out , or incorrectly installed gasket, causing a vac. leak. these type of things are hard to diagnose ( sp? ) unless you are there in person. all of the above is good advise. make sure that the float bowl to throttle plate assembly is not loose.

The base to bowl gasket is on my to check list. While it looks to be in place and I did run the torch around that area, it could have shrunk and covering the passages. The bowl gasket looks good as it is newer from other carb.

Do you have any kind of spacer, beside the gasket, between the air horn and the intake? The 226 was prone to some issues without it.

Yes I do have a spacer. Just so people know, when I said ran torch around it, it was unlit.

When you look at the jets, put a glance at the power valve to ensure it moves easily with a properly seated spring.

Check vacuum hose to the wiper motor.

First I want to thank everyone for their help. I put the other carb back on and it's running the same (both carbs). Although the original carb, fuel flow at idle does sound more smooth, the new carb does kinda gurgles.
I think I am running into other issues at this point and need to do more checking. One cravat; I did find a small hole in the top of the nozzle bar on the idle side. I was hoping of course that was the problem, not!
