Default Opportunity to buy a 2nd Model A

So . . . awhile back I put out some feelers through our local club that I was looking for a 5 window coupe or roadster. Someone (non-club memeber) called me last week that he heard through the grape vine that I was looking. Said he has one in the back of his garage that he hasn't touch in a few years. Turns out it's a 5 window coupe that he had since '68. I drove over to check her out and even took her around the block. Will need work but very solid. If the price is right I'm sure I can make room in my garage or fit through the slider in my walk out basement and do a frame off restore.

How in the heck am I going to sneak this into the house. It's not like items I can throw in the cart while shopping with my wife. LOL.

My wife was with me when I check out the coupe. I think she likes it but said I can't have both. I mean the truck and coupe, not coupe and her.

On a side note, even though it was a '68 restore, she still drove like a Cadillac compared to my truck, so I might end up selling the truck after a full restore is done on the coupe.

I did notice she was looking at pictures on her phone later that night of yellow Model A's since she likes yellow. The car is currently dark blue and I was thinking redoing the car in straw with red wheels, the bigger black stripe with red pin stripe.

Kind of like this roadster.

Let her pick the colors. That might help get “buy in” from her for the project.

Just a thought…. Maybe it will work.

You might want to “guide” the color choices by showing her some pictures of the Internet that have attractive color combinations.

If I end up buying the coupe, it'll sit in the garage till winter before I do anything. Wife will be going to Gilmore Model A days in Sept. with me in the truck so I'll be watching her eyes to see what color combo she gravitates towards.

So now before you even have the car you're talking restoration, a lot of work and expense. How is that going to play out?? If you manage to convince the wife to let you buy the car, then buy it and and enjoy it as is for awhile. Whatever all this costs, be prepared to cough up matching funds for whatever the wife may demand, new kitchen, new car, winter vacation in Florida.

LOL, we just bought a brand new (and I do mean newly constructed) house with a 3 stall garage. She's happy in that department. Yes, I do know the work, time and money that goes into it. One club member spent almost 40k in his restoration. I know what I'll end up spending and plan on 5 to 10 years on the project. That's why I want to keep the truck so I at least have something to use as reference and something to enjoy.

There's your clue, tell her "once the coupe is restored we'll sell the truck". Using the term "we'll" includes her in the decisions.

I make sure I'm always including her in my wording , like "I'm taking our truck to the car show this weekend". And when we talk about the coupe, I said she can pick the color and even give her a name. She laughed and said "even pink". I smiled and said Ford didn't offer pink as an option.

Speaking of color, I think I'm going to make a new thread regarding color.

Just buy the coupe "for her" then you have his and hers cars. "Why should I get rid of the truck, the coupe is your car, SURPRISE"

I thought about that too. She doesn't know how to drive a stick, much less what to do with the levers and GAV/choke. My niece (18) wanted to learn but just before that weekend I was going to teach her, their college called the students back.

You need to tell her that while the coupe is being restored you need the pickup to drive and haul parts around. It's working for me so far...

All good suggestions - but Model A wives are wise to all of it. They just mess with us.

I also explained to her that people buying project cars end up losing interest after a couple years and sell it as a basket case because they don't have anything to enjoy so that's why we need to keep the truck.

A few years ago my friend had to get rid of his A,he couldn't drive it anymore. It hadn't been started in 5 or 6 years,so I was going to get it up and running to sell for him.I hauled it home, got it up and running, and registered it to drive around a little bit.My job was to squeeze every nickel I could out of the car for my friend.A driving car will sell easier than a non-driver.My wife and I rode around in it most every night for a while, and she liked how smooth and quiet it was.One night she said, why don't you sell the roadster and buy this car.I said that I had kind of been planning to do that.I had four A's on the road at the time.A few weeks later she said, you already bought this didn't you.Yep,I had. What I didn't tell her was that I had bought it the day I brought it home.A farmer in town gave me some advice years ago,and I have found it to be 100% accurate. He said when dealing with the town or a wife it is easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask permission.

I tried that many years ago (twice, in fact - slow learner) with a 1958 Mercedes sedan and a 1958 Triumph TR-3. Never again. Rule #1: Don't Surprise the Boss. Mislead, obfuscate perhaps, but no surprises.

Ya gotta be careful, stuff like this tends to get out of hand.. That being said, why not try something different? A buddy has a '51 Studebaker starlite coupe he's been trying to sell me, I might give it a go..that whole commitment thing slows me down from jumping on the Studebaker, just finishing the journey with the A,it takes time..

I took my to-be wife with me when looking at buying a Model A about ten years ago. When we looked at the car I bought, she said, "I love that car." That's all I needed. It has been a very good car, too. Since then, I bought another A, two V8's and a Model T. She has been very supportive. She also wants to learn to drive the Model A's. I am a very lucky guy.

Yes, it does sound like a good match for you. So, apparently some of the other members that are telling me to ditch my wife aren't as lucky.

I should be hearing back from the owner of the car tomorrow so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

When I got my license in 1972 I found the A was too cold to use that winter.I found that a 61 Beetle with no heat was a lot warmer than the A.They multiply like A's too. After the first one I owned a few dozen more.My grandfather worked for a man that sold Subarus in the mid 70's,and at that time the bug owners were finding the Subaru a good replacement. My grandfather would call me and I would go to the dealership with a $100.dollar bill for the owner to put in his pocket.I'd sell them for $150-$250.I still want another Beetle, but they really have gotten pretty pricey. My criteria is,pre-67,STOCK.No lowering, mag wheels, souped up engines, modern interior. If the exhaust doesn't whistle I'm not interested.I have a solid 65 I have been sitting on for around 20 years, but every time I think I am going to get to it another A gets in the way.

That is the best advice. When I sold my Corvette that I owned 30 years, my wife was relieved ,and said thats great - look at all the projects we'll be able to fund - you're not looking at another car are you??

Two days later my 1930 Tudor was delivered(I was already looking for months). She was working in her office, and he delivered it around the corner from our house. I drove it around the block a couple times, and drove it into the garage. It wasn't until a few days later while I was at work that I get the text "what are those bugeyes staring out the garage"? Yes - better forgiveness than permission.

Keith, from what I see rust, and people souping them up are the issues. Oh yeah, and some crazy prices... My Dad had a new 74 Super Beetle and it was a great car. Passed it down to my Aunt.

I thought I would keep everyone updated and will not buy the other car at this time. Took the truck to a car show last weekend and wife had so much fun with the attention and stories from the older generation she wants me to work on the truck more to get it "sorted out" for more driving and tours which won't leave me enough time to work on a new project.

Better to ask forgiveness than permission, LOL.

Last car I bought I drug home during the broad daylight. Put it safely in the barn ready to start a tear down and restoration. My wife came out the next day (she was at work when I brought it home) and asked 'what the heck did I get now?'
My nosey neighbor sent her a text something to the effect, 'I see Kerry bought another car'. I suppose he was watching us unload it.

My nosey neighbor sent her a text something to the effect, 'I see Kerry bought another car'. I suppose he was watching us unload it.

Doesn't sound like a very good neighbor. Just watched and didn't help? Heck, when I brought my truck home, she wouldn't start and I had 2 neighbors help me push her off the trailer and into the garage. It just turned out the fuel line was clogged.

Sorry to hear so many Barners have or had unpleasant marriages to the extent they would let the wife go before the car.

As a veteran of multiple marriages, I gotta say that I love our Model A but if I had to pick one, the wife wins......

True, but it all depends on what you want out of life.

I'll agree with you 100%. Friends and material possessions may come and go but family and loved ones are always more important. If someone told me I had to give away my truck to help save my father-in-law dying from cancer I wouldn't have to 2nd guessed it.

I'm having a good ol chuckle at many responses. Some pretty good advise coming through. I have a question. Were you happily married prior to this purchase and are you happily married following this purchase? There in lies your answer.

I think it got better. At first she kept asking me why I bought the truck and not a tudor. But after a few car shows, parades and rides to the park to walk the dog, she loves all the waves and smiles. And spending more time together that we both enjoy.
