Fordo I to a cruiso?
Can I have a Ford o matic replumbed so that it operates like a cruise o matic? More or less so it starts in first gear?
Mike

Re: Fordo I to a cruiso?
It would be easier to convert to the Cruise-O-Matic as long as it will fit the application. That may not be possible for the small y-blocks.The later transmissions were mostly used on FE and MEL applications from 1958 on. The early dual range transmissions were still TV linkage controlled. In 1961 the vacuum modulated control Cruise-Os finally came out. The Single range transmissions were kept around for light duty stuff through 1959 then the aluminum case 2-speed Ford-O came out for the Falcon and Comet series as well as the later Y-blocks.
Some Cruise-O-Matic parts can be used in the single range transmissions to beef them up but the old case really isn't designed for dual range operation. |

Re: Fordo I to a cruiso?
Will a cast iron Ford O Matic bell housing bolt to a Cruise O Matic case? That would be the simplest solution.

If one is truly serious about upgrading to a true 3S the FMX upgrade is the cheapest way out. A C4 requires an adapter kit. Why are you dis-satisfied with the F/M? It has first gear if you want/need it. The F/M Single-Range was designed for fuel economy (2nd gear start) and to compete with the CHEV POWER-GLIDE. Even the C/M offered both 1st and 2nd gear start.

Try over at yblocksforever . Drylakesracer has a COM in his 56 ford and seems very pleased. Recent deal, from an old time transmission guy. He can provide the particulars.

Re: Fordo I to a cruiso?
I was just curious, when I send in the Fordo to get looked over if it could get replumbed to to start in first gear. If it can great, if can’t ok too. I will just have to get used to how the fordo shifts from 2-3 at the stop light.

Re: Fordo I to a cruiso?
I think if a person wanted to install a different transmission, just about any of them can be adapted but it takes time and ingenuity when you are doing one for the first time. Finding a decent choice that already has an adapter solution is what most folk gravitate to and I can't say I blame them. I would go for an AOD if I was making a change for an old Ford and wanted automatic shift. I like the idea of an overdrive.
