If it was mine, I'd go through the brakes - one end to the other and see what you have. It is very easy for the wheel cylinders to rust up, pistons freeze and you end up with partial brakes. And like others said - do a thorough inspection of all lines, rubber hoses, etc..

Beautiful car by the way . . . seems it has found a great new home!

I inspected the brakes. Good condition as well as the lines. Thanks.....great car, just needs a little TLC "underneath". They spent a lot a $$$$ on the body and interior, but must have ran out when it came to some of the mechanics. Lots was done there too, and some was not. The front shocks look like the originals....just as an example, and are of course, shot. Good solid car though but a little tired in spots. Nothing that more $$$ can't fix

Correction to my prior statement the Max Life is Mercon LV with is Full Synthetic, and should not be used in these transmissions. Therefor I am in the process of changing my to Valvoline Type F.

The prior post has not been corrected.

Relining the front brake shoes with some decent friction material like Porterfield has
(R4-S) will make it quite a bit better as far as stopping is concerned.
You won't want to even consider power brakes. Almost like disc
brakes. (sorry, but nothing beats a well designed disc setup for brake
consistency and longevity) I ran Porterfield shoes on my F1 for years before
upgrading to disc.

Nice car BTW. My dad had a '53 Merc from new up until about 1961/1962.
