IT'S A TRUE FACT!

About mid 1931 Ford replaced the narrow "Pickup" bed, 78-A, with the wide "pickup" bed, 78-B.

Don't know just how "rare" they are but considering the time of production...I guess one could say that they are somewhat rare and on top of that...I think they take a special rear fender???

They're not seen that often, but they are out there. You see more 28-29 Roadster Pickups because they made more of those.

One thing to keep in mind, Roadster Pickups can be faked pretty easily, but just because it has a wide bed and open cab doesn't make it any more valuable than a 28-29 RPU in my opinion.

If you want a truly rare Roadster Pickup, look for a 1932-33-34 RPU!

I have seen only one 31 indented firewall, wide bed/narrow fender RPU and one 33 RPU in the last 10 yrs. The Model A was rough original. That doesn't mean someone didn't put a wide bed on in the 40's or 50's, but if they did, they went to alot of trouble to change the firewall also. They were rare for me, but I also don't get out much.

Well, according to Bob Johnson's website, http://www.modelahouse.com/ Ford built 4145 Open Cab trucks in 1931. That includes 606 built by foreign plants.

So, although no where near scientific or correct, if we look at that number, divide in half to represent roughly the 6 months of wide bed production, we'd get 2077 open cabs. That number of course could be off as the open cabs might have been put on AA chassis. So...yeah. They are "rare" in a model a sense.

I seem to recall the Beller museum has a couple of '31 Open cabs, and I think he even has a AA open cab. He also has a couple of the later (33's or 34's) open cabs.
