8BA oil pan, pump questions

I am working on a 1-1/2 ton Ford truck with an 8BA engine which has not run in 35+ years.
Soon I will be removing the large (7 bolt) round clean out cover on the oil pan to remove sludge and check the oil pump intake screen.
2 questions --
1. How does the intake screen remove and attach to the oil pump?
2. I understand that the round cover has a propensity to leak. Any tricks to prevent that, like Permatex on both sides of the gasket?

I will be working safely (No Jacks) from below on my back and I like to know as much as I can about an operation before I get into it.

The screen is held into the inlet tube cover with a retainer spring.

IIRC it takes 2 gaskets.

Suspect the gaskets are doubled up to compensate for sheet metal distortion.

my experience trying to stop the clean out cover from leaking led to worse leaks! I always had a little drip out of the cover and bolts so when I rebuilt my motor last year I tried to clean up the pan, flatten it out and make it "right" new gasket and a little bit of silicone on both sides then snugged it down enough so I didn't warp the unit again. as soon as I put oil in it I had a puddle on the floor! got under there and cranked those bolts tight again! still dripped a bit but good enough I could break the motor in and fix it when I changed the break in oil. finally changed the oil a couple weeks ago and pulled the cover. cleaned it again, another new gasket and another thicker layer of silicone with more around the bolts. this time I tightened it right up and it's been dry as a bone!

One of the gaskets went on the inside of the pan where the ring with studs are and the other gasket on the under side (outside) where the cover bolts to the circle of bolts.

The only thing I've ever heard of stopping the leaks there is "Right Stuff" RTV on the inside and outside. The pan needs to be spotlessly clean and straight before using it, so as a practical matter it needs to be off the engine.

as I said earlier, ultra black RTV in significant qty around the bolts etc. using LOTS of brake clean flush as much oil out as possible. let it drain with the cover off after spraying with brake clean, rinse wipe and repeat a few times until it's nice a clean and no more oil coming down the bolts. single gasket between pan and cover with both sides of the gasket covered in a decent amount of RTV. especially around the bolts. once on tighten it right up. mine is leak free now.

That was a royal pain...... I mean a really fun and educational task.
Right stuff RTV and I bought these nifty flanged nylocks from McMaster-Carr.
Stopped 99.8%........ only way to be better is you'd have to get the pan off of the engine.

Can someone tell me if the the sump is the same as an 8BA with this oil pan??

It is not the same. It is a rear sump.

I just went through this. There is a gasket on the inside as well. Really a lot of crud inside the pan, almost couldn't tell the ring and studs were a separate part from the pan. I think these tend to get over tightened, the studs get pulled down which raises the ring up inside the pan pulling it away from the gasket. I spent some time straightening the ring out before putting it back together. I don't like anything inside the crankcase that can come loose and get sucked up the oil pump. So I put a thin layer of Permatex black silicone on both sides of the outside gasket only.

Follow up: Shortly after I originally posted this back in June, I took the cover off. It came off pretty easily and the inside ring with the bolts seemed to be resisting any easy attempt to loosen it so I did not. The oil pan and the cover were in very good shape and not bent or rusty. Going back together I used the RTV as suggested on both sides of the outer gasket and bolted it up. No leaks so far! Thanks for all the help guys.
