Old Racer Transmission
Greetings! Need help with any information someone can give me on a transmission from an old racer my grandfather( whom has passed) salvaged from an incomplete project from the 30's. I know its a Model A transmission. What I am not sure of is the front Bellhousing. downsized_0421131029.jpg

Re: Old Racer Transmission
Very nice unit, looks like it is set up as an in-out box. The clutch is the early "AR" multi disk type that most race cars used back in the day since they were a small diameter and light once the flywheel was turned down to the diameter of the disk housing. If you plan on parting with the unit I'd be interested. FOX is a maker i've never heard of, the Ambler Brothers were in Philadelphia, maybe it was made by them and marketed under the FOX name. Bob

Roadster, Saw a pic of a Speedco unit in a '50's Indy car that looked very similar, only, was open drive. Bill W.

Re: Old Racer Transmission
Those were common in race cars, made for both the A trans and the V8. As Roadster62 stated, the flywheels were cut down for lightness, and leg room was needed in the very narrow cars, also the aluminum housing was light.

Re: Old Racer Transmission
Thank you gentlemen for the help. I am not sure if this unit will be up for sale or not. Technically it still belongs to my grandmother but I am pretty sure she doesn't plan on using it to grind coffee beans. But then again I may be wrong. Can any one place an estimated value on this?

Re: Old Racer Transmission
About 8 years ago I had an early Frontanic flywheel. It looked like a cut down early 28 flywheel completely missing the ring gear flange and it had timing marks stamped on it. It looked factory made that way, not a modified Ford Flywheel. I traded it for some needed parts. Looks like this transmission would have been used for a simular if not exact setup. Rod
