Default carburetor problem

For the last six months I have been rebuilding a stock 39 Ford engine. I started with a piece of crap stripped down block. Slowly over the last few months I have been buying the pieces to get the engine complete. Bearings, rings, you name it, but always as cheap as I could find.

Well believe it or not, when I hooked up the battery, the last part needed, it fired up. But not all is well in "cheap town". To me it seemed to be missing. I pulled the plugs and they were wet with fuel. Fiddling with the carburetor, I completely closed the mixture valves and checked the plugs again. Still wet. Note, I rebuilt the cheap carburetor with a kit. Of course the kit contained gaskets, power valve , accelerator plunger a needle seat valve. Any ideas why so much gas getting thru?

You are not getting a seal with the gasket for the power valve. Very common problem, as the power valves being sold today are not correct. Buy a 5.5 valve from Ken ct with the proper gasket.

Cheap price, not necessarily cheap quality! The cheap part mentioned so no one would be confused with me buying new parts which have been professionally set up.

All the carburetor kits I have used included two gaskets that could fit around the power valve. If you install the wrong gasket, the power valve leaks fuel down into the vacuum passages in the base of the carburetor. I have seen several rebuilt carburetors with this problem.

Joe,
Make sure the iron base and bottom of bowl are flat....should not see
any light between them or you have a potential vac leak. The kit power valves
and gaskets as Ken says are verboten.
