Flathead fire up for dyno ( maybe)
You know a flathead wont start up on the dyno when the distributor doesnt turn ????
I guess they need one of those little adapter buttons???? |

Re: Flathead fire up for dyno ( maybe)
Found a cam button adapter ( from Speedway Motors) at lunch, they installed it and the engine starts and runs.
Now they are fighting a carb problem etc. May get a dyno sheet on this one this week....??? |

Re: Flathead fire up for dyno ( maybe)
This is the beauty of JWL's book. All of his modifications are backed up with an average of 3 Dino runs.
And Jim the intake should beread to ship this week, if you still want to use ir. Sorry about the delay. |

Re: Flathead fire up for dyno ( maybe)
If it's stock (looks like it) the power drops like a sack of sh1t at about 3700-3800 looking at dyno sheets. In John's book the stock dyno tests end at 3750. It's when the cam checks out. Hp probably in the 70-80 hp range.
I know these figures don't agree with Ford's dyno figures. Ford had a very happy dyno, and used the numbers to sell engines. Martin. |

Re: Flathead fire up for dyno ( maybe)
Is it a 221inch? If so on an honest dyno somewhere in the mid 60's hp. From what I've seen.

Re: Flathead fire up for dyno ( maybe)
Ok just had lunch with my flathead buddy setting up the 1939 engine.
Should be the last run as there are other engines to do. AND it only took four carbs, 4-5 power valves , two complete distributors, a set of H10 champions ( wet from power valve) , lifter adjustment ( one came loose and killed a cylinder ) fuel pressure regulator and a shortened ful pump drive rod.. The carbs were the worst problem, they started out with the "trunk" carb , in the trunk when we bought the car! I had two rebuilds on a engine at the shop ( local buiolder with chevy blood) and the owner bought a nos 94 off ebay. Between all these they took parts from three carb kits and the assortment making a final carb that ran the dyno with the sheet above. Pretty sad for sure as even the new carb didnt run out of the box!!!!!!! As usual theres always much more to the story but we are at the very least smiling a little bit today after the run above. Cant imagine even trying this one in a car...... |

Re: Flathead fire up for dyno ( maybe)
Bubba, you said it has a 4" crank in it, is the rest bone stock?
I'm not gonna get sucked in to the trap of comparing dyno A against dyno B on power numbers, but hp peaked at 2900rpm? Normally on a single carb flathead the peak is about 3500rpm. Like I said, not talking about the hp number, just the rpm the peak is. Any idea what's going on here? Martin. |

Interesting videos you have there.. Is that a Allen Syncrograph Distributor Machine you are spinning the distribs on?? There is one for sale locally here and he's looking for $300. Looks to be an older model and it comes with nothing but the machine and arm. Not sure if they are reliable and or what other do-dads are missing or needed? |
