Default 1935 Model 51

Hi Everyone. I'm new here and new to early Ford trucks and The Ford Barn. Recently picked up a '35 truck and I'm in the process for getting it road worthy. It runs drives and dumps. I just need to get a few safety items taken care of. Nothing major, lights, wiper, mud flaps, stuff like that. It's been interesting reading the other threads on the board. Always learning something.
The name on the truck door is from the previous owner. It looks good so I'm planning on leaving it as is.
Here she is:

Sharp truck. I worked on a farm when I was a teen ager, we had a 35 truck with a big flat bed, I remember I had a big load of baled hey over the roof, had to go down this long hill with a street light almost at the bottom, mechanical brakes, couldn't stop it if I had to, had it geared down, lucky no car in front, turned right onto another street with out dumping the load. Them were the good old days. Walt

Thanks everyone!
Dropped the windshield off at the glass shop today so that will be done. Got all the lights working over the weekend. For mud flaps I'm thinking about using horse stall mat from TSC. It should look like it belongs on the truck and it will be 1/3 the cost of real flaps. Still need to figure out what to do to get the wiper working.
Anyone know how to check and fill the hydraulic lift on a Gar Wood? I assume it would be through the top fitting on the ram, just not sure.

Congratulations on getting your truck. I can't help you with the mechanical aspects of the dump mechanism, but I have an extensive library of information and original Ford drawings so if you have any questions and want an opinion, just ask. My project is a 1935 1-1/2 ton 157" wheel base stake truck. I'm undertaking a full restoration to make it look like it just rolled off the assembly line in 1935. Best of luck with yours.

A trick I use is to pour ATF down the vacuum line and then work the wiper by hand. ATF is a detergent and will soften the junk inside the wiper.

I have a 1937 1 1/2 ton dump with Garwood body and " mineral " oil is what is called for by the manufacture. I have a "how to use" plate on floor board of truck that has some info. Let know and I'll send you a copy. My '37 has 35,000 original miles. Truck was from Sloatsburg, NY.

Wow, great looking truck. I've been hunting parts for a 36 model 51. If you need some info on where to look holler at me, be glad to help what I can.

If you have any info on the Gar Wood Body that would be great. Thanks

I purchased a used motor that was in decent shape but it still won't work under vacuum. I may go with a hand crank for now. Thanks for the tip on the ATF

A picture of that plate would be great! I wonder how I would determine what kind of oil is in there now?

Clem
It was my understanding that ATF was non detergent 10W oil with a coloring to identify leaks. It has additives, but not detergent. "Goes in red, comes out red.

I've known people that used gun oil in the wiper motor.

Rubber matting from TSC made a couple nice mud flaps. 4' x 3' x 1/2" thick cost $20. Easily cut with a utility knife. Time will tell how it will hold up.

Thanks

Very nice truck KDL! If the ATF doesn't work for your wiper try filling up the wiper motor with WD40. Let it sit for a week or so and try it. This is what I did with mine and it works like new!

A safety item that is well worth the effort would be to carry a 4x4x12 wood block with the truck to put between the subframe and bed frame when the bed is up for maintenance.
