Re: Battery Location
Ed,
I am not sure I understand the question. All of the Model A batteries were mounted under the drivers side floorboard. Charlie Stephens |

Re: Battery Location
All of the Model A's have the battery located under the driver floorboard as they are basically all the same chassis. I have seen people move them to the firewall or the trunk but the stock location works good for me.

Re: Battery Location
I've always wondered about this location for the battery.
It seems this would make for very cold batteries and very slow starting in cold weather. Was it to improve battery cooling at speed? My latest 2011 Ford has the battery ON TOP of the inline 4 engine!

Re: Battery Location
My battery must still be under the floorboard ---it still starts --havn't looked at it for many years. ---I will probably look at it this year, it is 25 year service time this year.

Re: Battery Location
I found my 12v battery under the floorboard on the drivers side after I started the car and the battery exploded. Apparently it wasn't put there for ventilation.

Re: Battery Location
Just read about that particular mounting location yesterday in either "Henry's Lady" or "The Ford Model A" - "As Henry Built It". If I remember correctly, the early 28 pick-ups had them mounted there. Front left hand corner

Re: Battery Location
A guy I know had a battery blow his bike off the ground... It was a 70s Moto guzzi police bike... Heavy as hell and lifted the bike off the ground burning and totaled the cars it was parked next to. No joke batteries are bombs if provoked. He would have been killed if he was riding it when it blew.

Re: Battery Location
Is it not common for cars of the Model A era or older to have the battery in the frame --away from the engine? Maybe due to batterys back then catching fire or exploding?

Re: Battery Location
Heat ---makes more evaporation
heat makes the chemical reaction faster ---the batterys of the model a day didn't last as long as todays they needed all the help they could get Leakage ---down under the floor there isn't much to drip on but the ground the battery most likely to explode is one that is ol;d and being charged hoping it will work for just a little while longer ---when it is hot and steaming from a forced charge any nearby spark will do ---if you are charging a battery and it gets hot the best thing to do is unplug the charger and walk away till it cools I have had 6 batterys in a golf cart blow up aty the same time ---the seat and I landed about 10 feet away, I didn't get hurt or get acid on me---they were old batterys and I tried to drive it right after charging |

Re: Battery Location
I've run a 12 volt batterys in the normal location on model A's for many years and never had a problem. Some get confused about positive ground and charge the battery up backwards, then when the battery is connected correctly it will blow up.

Re: Battery Location
The drivers side floor was the practical location for the battery. If the battery was installed on the passengers side under the floor boards it would be right over the muffler. If you've ever ridden on the passenger side you will know that the floorboards get hot. It would be DANE-JUS for the battery to be mounted over the very hot muffler .

Re: Battery Location
Any input on the idea of mounting the battery in a box on the driver's side running board? I would like to add decent carpet and better sound insulation to the floor and having to remove it to get at the battery is not great. Perhaps a metal box sprayed body color and running the cables through the running board and along the frame to the front?

Owning a model A is like being married to a woman. Any attempt at changing her nature will lead only to tears and disappointment.

Many confuse the Model T pickup bed with the Model A, especially when the bed is separated from the car. But the Model T differed in making accommodation for a battery below the bed floor boards. A metal plate similar to the plate used in the Model A foot board allowed access to the battery from the top for servicing - but not replacement. A short video (4 seconds) of a 1927 Model T battery replacement. Interesting in that the bracket apparently "swivels" to allow the battery to be removed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tYRzqACiwY Joe K
