Winter without a project?
No, not me.... I had this '46 tonner PU in deep storage in a shed down below. I got it in the 'gotta take all five jailbars' deal east of the mountains about six years ago. Good 7.50s all around....recapped michelin radials on the front, new tornels on the rear. No bed, no engine or trans, but pretty clean, with a genuine title. About seven years ago I got this other green jailbar tonner kinda rusty on the rainey West side. But... The bed was really OK somehow. About two years ago on a sunny early Fall day I married the good bed to the good cab and chassis. Then it went back in the shed. Flash forward til this Fall when I got that H six cyl running super smooth and cleaned up a nice T9 4 speed that fellow barner Art had given me. Call it magnetism or gravity, whatever, but when I get a spare moment I find myself working on a frozen window regulator or adjusting a door latch. Stuff I can do outside in a half hour window. It's getting rained on big time, but soon it will go into the work bay for bed and front clip removal, brakes and engine/trans install. Every time I need a part I find a good useable one. This will not be a perfect truck by any standards. But it will be a solid and useable truck. The red tonner PU I installed a cummins in is decked out like a heavy work truck and noisey beyond belief! With added leaf springs all around it is one rough riding SOB, but I Love it like that. This one is gonna have it's own quiet and lightweight feel. Heck, with the 100.00 lifetime vintage plates and Hagerty ins at about 100.00 year, why not get it running/driving? My intention is to get it running/driving looking like the pics, but I have two better doors, well not rusty on the bottom anyhow, but they both have lower hinge issues. They are both green. I might switch them out. I have a good enough stock seat. The interior and floors are pretty good and dash is un drilled and never even had a heater or sun visors Anyhow, this is what I've been up to this Fall. Will report as I get time.

Re: Winter without a project?
This is the trip when I got the Tonner from East of the mountains. Very unusual country over here. In an hour you can drive from a very wet coastal plain, drenched by Pacific storms, but quite mild year'round. In that hour you crest the Cascade range and enter an arid high country. Hot as blazes in the summer and freezing in the winter and way less moisture. Great climate for sheet metal.

Re: Winter without a project?
Gary, what pass is that? I've been over every pass in the State but those pics aren't ringing a bell. If I had to guess it would be North Cascades or possibly Stevens, both of which I haven't been over in years. Judging by the pick up location of the third photo you must have been in North/central or NE part of the state seeing the pine trees in the background. It is rather exhilarating to crest the summit(s) then descend into warmth, sunshine and the smell of pine trees (except in the winter when it's colder than a tax collectors smile over there).

Re: Winter without a project?
Thank you Pete! And seems just a few years back an early bronco could be sitting in a row of dead vehicles. This pic shows heading south from HWY 20 towards Wenatchee to pick up some grill bars and other parts from Barner 'tacoma cream'. Then West over SR 2 across Steven's pass.

Re: Winter without a project?
If I'm not mistaken they have started using some briney brown fluid on the roads East of the mountains during the frequent snow conditions. Back when these trucks were on the road you just needed to know how to drive in the snow. And the snow over there seems quite dry to me. The TV says the Cascade mountains could get something like 4' of snow tonight in the passes. Skiiers gonna love that. I was thinking of going skiing next weekend myself, but then I remembered I was gonna be busy sticking pins in my eyes instead.....

Yes indeed! I'll drink to that. And let's not forget Mercman from Oz and V8Coopman for some remarkable illustrations/enlargements and knowledge. I apologize in advance for others I've missed that contribute in such a manner. I can only speak for myself about being techno ignorant but my sense is many of us share the same malady. For me it's much appreciated.

Re: Winter without a project?
GB you conyinue to impress me. Some on this site will spend thousands on a restoration and then park it in a garage under a cover. You pull a jailbar out of the woods, have a ball making it roadworthy then fire a load of lumber onto it and go to work! I think you're having toooo much fun! Certainly your possessions do not possess you.
May it never end! ....Bill. |

Re: Winter without a project?
Well, into the workshop with this rascal. You might recognize this door on a 1 1/2 ton earlier in this thread.. All I got was it's cab and this door, but what a prize. It sat outside here in the rain for six years. Never even looked at the bottom. Last night hit it with a knotted cup brush. I have another one similar for the driver side. Pulled a front brake so far. Nice bonded lining, really thick.

Re: Winter without a project?
Got the front wheels/hubs /brakes dissasembled and am amassing a list of brake parts to order. Everything but shoes and springs etc. Basically anything hydraulic. My wife was in town today doing some holiday shopping so I attacked the miserable tailgate situation and welded a piece pf 3/4" black pipe at the bottom as a stiffener and hinge much like Henry did, except he never would have wasted that much steel at the bottom of a tailgater.... Heck, most of the ones I have owned are still solid after almost 75 years in the weather......

Perhaps another project? Not a jailbar, but already all wheel drive... Ignore the f250 nonsense. First 3/4 ton of this era I have seen. Been a couple of 39 .5 tons surface in the last couple years.

Re: Winter without a project?
That is a VERY nice MH project! The reason I stick to jailbar trucks is because the first batch of them came with tons of extra parts. That truck is in very nice condition for an MH. Usually they were beat to death by the government, then sold at auction and beat further by a local farmer!

Re: Winter without a project?
Thanks Mr. Hoovie, you've done it again. The PO of the truck I took the bed from had welded this angle bumper to the bed's rearmost crossmember and the butt ends of the frame rails. In order to remove it I chose to torch it off leaving a 34" gap in the angle between the frame rails. At some point I will fill this in. For some odd reason I sort of like this bumper with it's side stiffening pipe braces. The old guy I bought the truck from told me his uncle Oscar had built that bumper in the early sixties from scrap steel obtained from the nearby naval ship yard in Bremerton.

Re: Winter without a project?
It is passable in my neighborhood. Not much, good or bad ever happens here. I live on a mountain in the middle of nowhere. My wife is working another 24 hour shift with home eldercare and I should be thrilled to be home alone, listening to the Alan Jackson Christmas album but I think about being a kid in the sixties and the neighbors would come by for a drink and my mom would play the piano and they'd all sing Christmas songs. Ok, different times, different worlds..... And , oh never mind, I'm being a nostalgic old sap again.

Re: Winter without a project?
GB,
Just had a ting of that old kid thing when I plugged in the tree this morning! Miss smelling the real tree heat up with the old hot bulbs! We used to have snow in the winters. Not so much anymore?? My old bones dont seem to want to move liked they did. The greatgrandson just arrived to get on the buss to go to first grade. Maybe I am getting old?? I enjoy your work on the Jailbars! Have learned a lot about them! Having lots of parts in the rust free conditions sure makes it easier to get a new project started too! I really like how you build things that will function and last! We need a close up of the pipe in the tail gate. Merry Christmas! Regards, Chris

GB,
Here is a panel I found locally. As you can see it is pretty well spent. Pretty typical for this neck of the woods but I am sure it would be at least good for parts. Happy holidays and keep the stories of your projects coming. I sure enjoy reading them! |

Re: Winter without a project?
The panel in the foreground is a tonner. Actually not all that bad. I would tackle it because I have fairly low expectations. The panel behind it I would guess a chevy? Just not a ford. Maybe a dual wheeled 1 1/2 ton?

Some tailgate stuff. The 3/4" black pipe was welded to a piece of 1/8 x 1" strap from the hardware store. Picture a cross section of this would look sorta like a letter Q. Then I cut off the rotten round section of the old gate and weld the 1/8" strap to the inside. Now from the front we see the jagged edge above the 3/4 pipe. I spot weld this every 2" or so. Douse with rustoleum rusty metal primer. It has a fish oil base and it is my Go To. When that is dry or a bit tacky I pump in a partial tube of 'sikaflex' polyurethane marine sealant. Picture this as bondo , but rubber. It sands and grinds well. OK, well enough. I will send a pic of this same thing I did to my red tonner 3 years ago. None of those bubbles that blossom out of a bondo/rust repair. Ick.

Re: Winter without a project?
And my red diesel powered tonner. I did this tailgate 3 or 4 years ago and it sits in an open shed , tailgate facing the prevailing SW rain soaked Western Washington Winter.

Re: Winter without a project?
Little bit of Hunter Green Satin rattlecan, misted with a spray bottle of laquer thinner, some scotchbrite pad and it all looks just as shabby as the rest of the vehicle. But now you can fold down the tailgate and it stays attached to the truck.

This is a little late in coming but it took me a while to find these photos. Someone wanted to know what that panel truck was that was parked behind the one in the foreground. Here is photographic proof. Better late that never?

Thanks! I was thinking it was a Ford based on shape of window. So that would have been a 1-1/2 tanner? Year?

Re: Winter without a project?
Now THAT one is worth restoring! Or at my shop it would be worth 'fixin up'! The tonner has a really nice rear fender. It's the right rear that is almost always beat. Front fenders are a dime a dozen for tonners and big trucks as the wheel opening is larger than the pickup. Many people find this out too late after the swap meet has folded up.

Re: Winter without a project?
Looks like a Watson or similar auxiliary trans. Wonder if its an over, direct, and under unit? Had one in a '40 1 1/2 ton flatbed I had. Better than a 2 speed rear end most of which were low and lower gearing.

Re: Winter without a project?
This morning before work I removed the driver side kingpin with my newly fabricated kingpin 'pusher'. Inspired by a snap on product I saw in a thread here. With the 18v impact driver on the pusher bolt the kingpin rose steadily and easily. I had to add a piece of shafting to push it all the way out until I get a longer push bolt. The wooden honing spoon can't be far behind at this point. I have the backing plate and and spindle setting on my woodstove in the cabinet shop and after dinner will go down with my solvent and brush and get them cleaned up. Tomorrow the other side. I have the new brake hoses and the 5 cylinders in shipping boxes. Hard lines I get at the local napa. I prefer the black coated lines. Still waiting for my kingpin set to arrive. I have always used NORS pins in the past but noticed a set of current manufacture by moog on many sites, so gonna give them a try. Really hoping they aren't the new 'pre-honed' style. Wih all the variables involved, how could they ever get that right? Sheesh!

Re: Winter without a project?
Since I have no heat in my shop where I work on trucks, I sneak up to my warm cabinet shop to set greasy parts etc on the woodstove so they can soften up. Then gunk and parts brush, laquer thinner, scotchbrite, sandpaper, air hose and a coat of red primer before I retire for the evening. It has worked out well for over 40 years. Woodshop pays for the heat and by early evening the dust has settled well enough for the kind of painting I do. Don't git much better than a day like this. Signed, 'Easily Amused'....

Re: Winter without a project?
Gary,
I agree on the heat thing. I have quickly gotten spoiled having some heat in the shop too. Now I need to get the ambition to get out and do something! I like your king pin removal tool! Its all about the tooling! I have not been on here enough to know about the wooden honing spoon? Your system of cleaning and painting is very similar to mine. Have you ever tried electrolysis process for parts cleaning? I should set up my tank again and get something going. But right now I need to complete projects in the shop. Regards, Chris

YOU needing ambition? Heck, you get more done in a month than many do in a year. I am planning to insulate and heat a 14' x 28' section of my truck shop. No access to park a vehicle because of terrain and door situation, but would be a nice place to rebuild carbs, door innards, do some parts painting, welding etc. As far as the spoon is concerned, stay tuned for a video.

Wood stove? I'm betting you have plenty of leftover scraps to feed it. But then again an open flame around gas and other cleaning chemicals in a shop might not be a good idea. Maybe outside and ducted in?

Gary,
Get that shop with some heat! You have a lot of things going all the time! Still learning about Ford jailbars here! Keep us up to date on the green truck progress! Electrolysis?? If you haven't tried it, I think you would like it! If you have then you know the ins and outs. Regards, Chris

Re: Winter without a project?
I keep the solvents a good distance from the stove. But I couldn't have the stove outside. I have heated my home with wood for 43 years, and my current woodshop for 37 years. I love the way the warmth sinks into the old bones and look forward to getting this one hooked up, but first a lot of insulating and sealing of drafts. My son and I pulled the front clip off this green truck before lunch today, Wednesday being the night my wife is on her 24 hr shift, I am heading down to do battle with more parts removal. Love the access with fenders and grill put away in a shed!

Re: Winter without a project?
I found that locating the stove three feet from wall with a horizontal pipe before the elbow up gives more heat. The horizontal pipe act as a radiator instead of all the heat going up.

Re: Winter without a project?
Gary,
I am getting old and lazy. We heated with wood for 40 years in the house. Lots of work but loved the wood heat for warmth! The shop got some heat in the floor and works well but you cant back up to it and cook like with a wood fire. So currently I am making up for it with making maple syrup each spring. We burn about 5 cord in about 6 weeks. When I am done with firing the arch for the season I have had my fill of wood fire for a few days. Sounds like your making good progress on the green truck! We need some pictures too! Regards, Chris

Re: Winter without a project?
I'll get some maybe after dinner. She is stripped bare from the firewall forward. Well, still an axle and springs. The box comes off over the weekend. That way I can run all new brakelines and hoses. Spindles, backing plates etc are gathered round the cabinet shop's wood stove with primer drying. I picture this as a 'rolling barn find'.... But with that smooth H six, steers well, brakes completely new, state of the art 'used extension cord' wiring. It came with new recaps on the front and brand new 'store bought' Tornel 7.50x17 tractions on the rear. I will do some minimal rust repair but it will be camoflauged into the old faded paint.

Re: Winter without a project?
The weather has moderated to our usual 45 degree daytime. So for now it's more importantant to me to get a bit of truck time. Still waiting for kingpins which were shipped about Christmas. In the meantime I bought the brake tubing and other stuff while it is apart and accessible. I don't know this truck's history, but it never had a heater.... Most of my trucks had six or eight holes for heater hose in the firewall. When the original heater gave out they';d grab one from grandpas' studebaker and drill more new holes. A guy needs to stay warm..... Funny, it never had a driver side sunvisor either. Never seen that. The passenger side was optioinal, but holes were never drilled for DS either. Another Great thing.... The frame number matches the wa state title I got with it!

It appears to have a lot of windshield wipers, GB. Well twice as many as my pickup. Odd given the no heater or sunvisor situation.

Re: Winter without a project?
Gary,
Thanks. Pictures of your progress, bring us right up to speed with you. GREAT looking cab and sheet metal as Mark mentioned! I had never considered the extension cord wiring application. A new concept for me but actually not far from how I really do things in my world too. So will the truck get a Studebaker heater? I will stay tuned as the plot thickens! Stay warm by that wood stove! I miss that heat! Another month and I will get my share for a month. This is going to be a nice addition to the family. Regards, Chris

Wow, been at a jobsite all day and returned to all the fun responses. Some may have noticed the old equipment seat in the truck. I have a rusty green tonner parts truck but it had a nice seat I got in Montana when I went there for a front clip for the tonner panel. I will use this seat in my current project. It had been recovered and only damage was a silver dollar size cigarette burn through at the drivers lap. Great Balls of fire! It has some deterioration being in this climate, but looks the part for this truck. The seat back is perfect. I will also use the steering wheel from the rusty truck as mine has many bad cracks. Here's some pics and Mark, speaking of rust free parts, these fenders are the best Montana has to offer. Came off a grain truck we parted out over there. They went on the panel. Oh, and look, that's a southwind heater in the rusty parts truck!

Re: Winter without a project?
Nice firewall. Many of the wrecks I bring home have the heater holes made with a hammer and chisel. The really skilled would drill 1/8" holes in a circle, then grab the hammer and chisel.

Re: Winter without a project?
A holesaw was a real luxury item back then. Even today a nice setup is big money if you don't use it for work. The 1/8" holes joined would certainly show that the job was done 'in a workmanlike manner'. I'd think that following up the procedure with a Large tapered punch or perhaps a broken truck axle could fold the tabs over and provide a nicer rest for the heater hoses. There I go 'Churchin it up' again.

Re: Winter without a project?
Jail Bar’s have really come to be popular in the past couple years. Looked @ a real clean driver in 2012 & could have had it for under $5K. No more, nice ones bring a big $ now! I always liked them even when they were considered the red headed step child of Early Ford PU’s. Quirky Cool! I believe inadvertently I got a Pretty but a Frankenstein put-together & reconstruct title called it a ‘40 Ford PU. Turned out it started life as a ‘42-‘46, the frame, rear fenders & bed & probably the cab we’re a Jail Bar & front end was a ‘40 w a ‘41 hood. Looks good, runs good so I’m happy, LOL!

Re: Winter without a project?
I think that the wheelbase went from 112" to 114" in '42. I have some 40 pu front fenders and a '41 hood. I was thinking of doing a graft like you describe on a project last year but the wheel openings were off. I did not get very far down that avenue, but thought with some fender modification it could be done.

Making holes: I resisted buying one because they are a little pricy but the step drills from Milwaukee tools really may some nice clean holes in sheet metal! It made short work of this air vent project. Worth the $65. I am sure that would work on a lot of automotive applications also. The 6 cylinder engine is sweet! Regards, Chris

Re: Winter without a project?
I have to afree with you Anthony, fitment looks great! I would love to have a measurement of a 40-41 pickup from the firewall flat face to the CL of front axle. Anybody? I have learned that firewall to front axle is a very important dimension when messing about with sheet metal. I would not alter this current truck, but thinking about the blue thing I built on the landcruiser frame. That could evolve.

Re: Winter without a project?
The space between the cab and running board changed 41 to 42. The blue truck looks like the cab is the correct height from the running boards for 41, kinda curious how it was done.

Re: Winter without a project?
I once put a '47 tonner bed on a '38 tonner. The '38 running board is like almost 2 1/2" thick...( in profile) while the '47 running board is more like 1 1/2" deep in profile . It took some massaging to make it look right.

My 41 pickup doors scrape the running boards so they must be quite close normally.

Hmm, further review of 41 and older pickups shows the blue truck isn't as close as I first thought. Clever work however it was done.

Re: Winter without a project?
As I mentioned there is still a part of me that would like to put my '40-'41 front sheet metal on my 'blue bomber' that I built on a toyota landcruiser 4 door wagon chassis. The front '40 fenders are quite rough so I wouldn't be against cutting the fender openings bigger at the front. The current jailbar fenders are one ton and larger style with the larger openings. This is needed anyways with the 33" tires. Just thinking out loud for now. Like I didn't have my hands full already.
Back to this thread topic, I installed the spindles, tie rods and drag link yesterday after work. I have painted the backing plates and have brake tubing, hoses, cylinders etc on hand. Ohh wait my daughter and her family are visiting from Seattle this weekend, so I better run down before the ferry unloads and do some brake work!

Re: Winter without a project?
If I could morph this thing into the '40 style front sheet metal it would look an awful lot like the one on the left.

Re: Winter without a project?
Here's a couple of pics showing the way I fix up an old truck. It certainly isn't a restoration, nor is it a rat rod, it isn't a resto mod or a 'rusteration'. It's just a low budget way to get a hulk back on the road in a safe manner and enjoy it and perhaps enjoy long term 'as is', or sell to someone who wants a driver or a truck for a restoration project. Either way, if I kept it here as it was, in a dark shed, no engine or trans, it would have been crushed upon my demise. Truth be told I kinda like a truck that looks beat up (or unrestored)on the outside and starts reliably and runs like a clock. It is the opposite of an old truck with 12 coats of hand rubbed lacquer over a bunch of bondo, a 4" drop and poorly done chrome that won't start. We've all seen our share those

Re: Winter without a project?
I always say, "there's nothin wrong with an old car, that looks like an old car". Or, in this case, an old truck. For me, while I certainly admire the skills and devotion folks put in to a top notch restoration, I get the thrill out of driving them. As good as condition as you can find...but they don't have to look new for me to enjoy owning and driving. Carry on GB, your doin just fine. That woody sure looks good in the background, your crowning achievement right there!

Re: Winter without a project?
Gary,
You have my whole hearted support! Fits the way I think most of the time at this stage in my life too. You are really going at this truck project! Thanks for the pictures and updates! Makes me want to go do a little bit of something useful too. Oh I like the full frame off resto work guys do to there machines also. My old brain just seems to have a hard time going to that place! If you and Mart and I got together it would be dangerous for old Fords! Good thing we on opposite sides of the earth! Really enjoying your jailbar build! By the way I do not recall seeing a jailbar around here in my life. Humm? Regards, Chris

Re: Winter without a project?
The ones I took off had 4 bolts. The ones I bought had the cast boss for four but only three were drilled and tapped. Front brakes on tonner are same as 1/2 ton, maybe cars too? The backing plates have four bolt holes for the brake cyls. Maybe 4 because of being a tonner? Face it, the 2" or so center hole takes care of all the shear forces involved in clamping on the binders with a load of green lumber in the bed. And about getting the backing plate to spindle bolts lined up with the universe, They are inside the square tin cup and seems the need to keep them in a radial pattern so the corners are not crossing the spindle forging for best clamping. Overthinking? Certainly not the first time.......

Re: Winter without a project?
I have zero experience with jail bar trucks, you da man for that. Pretty sure though cars from 39 up use 3 bolts. I would have to go out to the frozen junk in the barn to verify, but going from memory they use 3 so you cant put the wrong one on the wrong side. Cant say off hand, is it only 3 holes are drilled and tapped, I forget...irrelevant if your truck had 4. I'll shut up now...carry on GB

Re: Winter without a project?
Now you guys got me wondering... I think I still have the cylinders I removed in my scrap pile. I know for a fact there are four holes in the backing plate, but that could be so they work for either side. I am almost finished with the front brakes and steering stuff. I plugged the port for the rear brake line for now. Next I will install the H six and T-9, at which point I can drive it outside, remove the bed and back it into the shop for work on the hind quarters. The pics are of the diesel tonner a couple years back. So nice working on that stuff with the sheet metal off. Yes, I should pull the cab, but probably won't happen.

Gary,
Your doing great! Take the wife to one of those fancy places with shrimp and steak. I am sure you will noodle out the three vs 4 bolt issue. Your providing incentive form me to do a little in the shop on the 32 also! Regards, Chris

Pete, you really have it down with expanding those photos! I hope this green truck doesn't need as much rear spring work as the red one.

Re: Winter without a project?
That pipe wrench was under our Christmas tree last year! My stepson is a gearhead and knows a good gift when he sees one. It almost seems ridiculous, but last summer I had to replace my rear axle yoke and seal in my 92 f350 and it needed some ungodly torque to crush the crush washer. How to hold that square-ish yoke while tightening up the nut? The handle end of this 3' wrench rested on the concrete slab while I torqued the nut. Pretty much all the 'soon to be 69' year old gearhead could do to hang it back up on the wall afterwards.

Re: Winter without a project?
AND.... Today being a weekend, Saturday I got the 4 speed bolted up to the six and today I cranked up the engine/trans with my 5 ton Beebe Brothers hand crank winch and rolled the chassis underneath and lowered the assembly onto its mounts. FUNNY, I always thought those forward holes were for the SIX, but my H dropped right into the same engine mount holes as the V8. Maybe the G needed those forward mount holes. I do know for a fact that I will need to move the rad support forward to the six cyl mount rad holes and I do have a shroud/ hood latch assembly made for the six. I think it will all go quite seemlessly. I have never had a flathead six, but from what I read they have the low end torque and the V8 beats them at 75 mph plus. This 40 mph island is all about steep hills, and I LOVE the T-8 / T9 crash box transmission. Some of you know I did a very similar tonner PU 2 years ago with a cummins diesel and a GM sm465 granny low 4 speed. While synchro in 3 gears, the GM tranny is a bear to shift. The Ford's crashbox, once you get used to it, glides into every gear like silk. Can't wait to drive a low end torque six, mated to my favorite transmission.

Re: Winter without a project?
Thanks . That lower pic gives one the scale showing how large these 7.50 x 17 tires are. I held back on painting the engine and frame this time. It is hard to know where to stop. My mission here is to marry a pretty decent engine-less truck with a good running engine. They both arrived here in two different trading deals and deserved to be put together. Not exactly sure what the future holds for this truck, but it will be a functional vehicle in a couple of months. One thing I will need to source is the six cyl type of accelerator pedal and likkage. I think the rod to the carb pushes instead of pulling to increase speed.

Re: Winter without a project?
Went into my back woods after lunch and found two complete six cylinder type pedal and linkage assemblies on old cabs. Now I need a driver's side battery box. Haven't found one. Anybody have a picture of one and how far from the firewall it's located? Looks like it's gonna be in the way of the dipstick, the oil filter or the distributer. I have no intention of blocking access to the distributor though.

Re: Winter without a project?
My little foray after lunch netted me a jailbar firewall 'kidney cover' as well as the two pedal assemblies for the six. Not sure, but might need to be altered, as the six during the jailbar years was the G model, not my H. The upper one in the photo I think is straight. The lower one came from a slightly stove in firewall. If you live in Maine the firewall was staved in.

Re: Winter without a project?
Gary,
Man is that nice to walk out to the vast warehouse and find most of the part you need! I am sure with some minor engineer changes you can adapt the push to a pull system for throttle. Or a string could work too? Just sayin...... How come your work bench and mine look the same? And yes its a very slippery slop to know when to put down the grinder and paint! I have some difficulty with that too. but the older i get the easier it is for me to be lazy and not clean and paint. I play the patina card a lot! Thanks for the updates! Your moving right along on this jailbar! It will be so happy to move again! Regards, Chris

My warehouse in the woods. I need to set the other cab on a pallet. Stuff doesn't last long on the damp earth. Just out of the picture is a faitly complete but rusty tonner. It has a crack free 2 spoke wheel and a Southwind heater to donate

Re: Winter without a project?
Sounds like your 'frozen swamp' neighborhood is similar to Western Washington. That's why I like to get my vehicles from the other side of the Cascades. You can have that garnish molding if you want it. It looks rather pitted though. I can get you some pics tomorrow. I might have a better one too. Last night I wire wheeled the better accelerator assembly and since it was from East of the Cascades, it cleaned up nicely. Funny, it was on a bare cab when I bought it 6 or so years ago and then sat in my woods since then. I am often amazed with the condition of ford parts when left out in the elements. Frames etc. seem to handle the exposure to weather very well. Today I it was sunny and beautiful so I quit work at about 3 and built a battery box for the driver side. (a six cyl thing) as manifolds are on the pass. side. Pics later.

Re: Winter without a project?
Thanks Pete. I called that picture 'silver spoon' when I saved it. Dang, you are working overtime on my crummy little thread. I owe you, big time, and here's that battery box I built this afternoon. The uprights are 1 1/2" square tubing with 1/4" wall. Everything came from my big ugly scrap pile. Back when the ex had us going to church I remember there was a bible verse ' Do not store up treasures on earth where moth and rust destroy'.... I beg to differ.

Re: Winter without a project?
It's 8:40 here and 32 degrees on the back porch thermometer. Just came up from more wire wheeling. It's Wednesday again, the night I get to stay out all night because my wife is on a 24 hour eldercare shift. Last week I made that video. Tonight somehow I have Tanya Tucker crankin it up while I am de-rusting... Dammit, gonna be 69 in May and I just can't seem to figure out how to be a 'proper adult'. Oh well.

“If you live in Maine the firewall was staved in.“
If it already happened it was “stove in”. If your about to do it, as in “I’m gonna stave it in, then she’ll fit”. The dialect may be different up the road......great job out there bud!..... .....Mark

Re: Winter without a project?
Gary,
I like to have some type of music playing if I am working too! I do a lot by myself and it somehow keeps me motivated. I really like the battery tray and support! Well designed and built. The truck looks great with the engine in place. My guess is you will like the low end torque of the 6 cyl. You're making great progress! Must not be far from firing it up?? Thanks for the update. Now I need to get out and work on something! Regards, Chris

Re: Winter without a project?
When I was a kid my folks had a set of bookends with the bow of a lapstrake whaleboat pitching outa the sea with a harpooner hanging over the stem poised to strike. There was an inscription on the base that read 'A dead whale or a stove boat'. That always seemed odd until I worked in Maine for a couple of years in my early 20s. My Mom was from New Bedford Ma. For many years known as the whaling capitol of the world. Thanks Mark for the proper usage. Out West we use a radio flyer wagon tub when extra room is required in the engine bay. Staving is ok for an inch or so, but it has it's limits. Thanks again my friends!

Balance issue as I understand it. All I know is that if its not phased properly there will be a noticeable vibration when driving.

Re: Winter without a project?
I never pulled the splines apart on this driveline. I just found it leaning up as a unit in a corner of my shop. I will check that nobody ever set it up out of phase. Side note: When I put the diesel in my 47 tonner I had to shorten the front driveshaft by 4" because of the GM 4 speed. Driveshaft shops are relatively cheap.... But they are on the mainland .. Arghhhh. I cut the 4" out somewhere near the middle with my Chinese chopsaw. I then turned a maple dowel (like Momma's rolling pin) but 18" long, the exact size of the ID of the driveshaft. Hammer fit. To get a dowel so true on a hand wood lathe I built a plywood jig up on top with a flat table for my router to ride on. I roughed out the blank with a gouge like I would a table leg, then set up the router with a 3/4" straight cutter on the rails. As the lathe spun I ran the router over and over the top and acheived a nice tight dowel. I marked the center with a sharpie, drove it into one side. Pinned it with a screw, tapped the other side till the chopsaw cuts met, THEN phased the yokes with a good level and a straightedge and welded it all the way around. Yes the dowel is still in there. I clocked 66 mph on the interstate with my speedometer app on my phone. No vibes, and now it's been 2000 miles. I think the weld is like 7" linnear and shearing that would be tough. Besides, no drama, I'd just loose my forward motion as I coasted to a stop alongside the road.

Re: Winter without a project?

Well, not quite! Phasing really has nothing to do with balancing, as such. To understand the theory, one must first realize that any time a u-joint is at SOME angle (NOT in straight alignment), the drive shaft actually speeds-up and slows down four times per rotation. The greater the angle that the u-joint is deflected, the more pronounced the effect. If both joints on a shaft are in phase, the slowing down and speeding-up should have an identical effect from EACH u-joint, making the function completely similar and complementary for BOTH joints. If the two u-joints are out of phase with each other, the two ends of the shaft will be trying to speed-up and slow down at different times in the cycle. That can only cause twisting and vibrating and all sorts of contortions going-on with the drive shaft in that situation. In other words, EACH u-joint MUST speed-up and slow down at exactly the same time and rate. DD . Last edited by V8COOPMAN; 01-30-2022 at 01:12 AM. |

Correct DD, I learned that as I did 2 years of votech auto repair school in the early 70's and never used the degree, except for my home non sense. Now for fun, a poster on the hamb today spoke of two fellow workers that are from Giana (spelling?) an island, no parts available, very skilled at you fix what you got...period. I thought of GB right away .

Thanks for the clarification. Never knew exactly why but when I worked as a mechanic at a local dairy in the '70's I was well aware of the result of an out of phase driveshaft in a Divco milk truck.

Re: Winter without a project?
Yes, an excellent video! I am gonna start building one of those units right away and test it out with a handful of my wife's credit cards. Do you think skilsaw blades would work the same as sprockets? I don't have any sprockets, but dang do I have a lot of circular saw blades.

Re: Winter without a project?
Got close to a startup or short drive this weekend, but shop was cold as heck and wife and I put a movie on and sat by the woodstove instead. Had a great afternoon and that old truck will still be there next weekend, and many more. I need to save some of this build for the 'roll out into the sun' days in the spring. My dad died in '79 of lung cancer at 52 years old. While he was still in ok shape I took a greyhound bus from Washington to Massachusetts to spend time with him. We talked a lot about our 'old days'. I remember a lot of them, but one thing that stands out a humorous is him talking about the 14 year old Me that would get a new (AMT/Revell) model car kit and I would set right about to assembling it and wouldn't go to sleep until it was fully complete. At 26 I remember thinking that nothing much had changed in the last 12 years. Now.... 42 years later .... hopeless case.

Re: Winter without a project?
Gary,
Your dad told about you and the model kits, somewhat predicting your future. I did the same thing. Would stay up half the night gluing and assembling plastic car kits also. Guess I am still doing that as I spent most of the evening in the shop working on the 32 truck. Just steel and a little bigger. Same kids playing with toys and continuing to learn! Speaking of Dads. I used a trick to get the door hinge pin out that my Dad first told me about years before I ever tried it. Thought of him tonight when the pin moved with the air hammer vibration. Keep up the good work! Yep it will be right where you left it! Like you, I also spent some time with the wife and went out to one of those fancy restaurants, and used her money, to buy us a nice dinner! Regards, Chris

Re: Winter without a project?
Yesterday I made some temporary support rods for the radiator from some conduit I found up in the rafters. While running the six on my stand for a couple buddies I blipped the throttle and sucked the radiator back into the fan. Yikes! The hoses seemed enough to star it (untilt they softened with the heat). Just cosmetic, no leaks, but I know myself well enough to know I will want to do a few shakedown runs before I install the front clip. This time I have brakes so shouldn't be ruining THIS new radiator crashing through my wife's henhouse yard. I have grown up a lot since that incident.

Re: Winter without a project?
Her broom and mop handles are wood so I'm saving them for kingpin hones when working on the bigger trucks. The design and construction of these stay rods was directly influenced by the cross arms on the A shaped ends on my grandkid's swingset. I measured them eye to eye and they were a bit too short.

Re: Winter without a project?
My Wednesday night with the wife doing a 24 hour shift. It's 10:30 pm here and I drove the beater truck in and out of the shop a few times. I have an outboard motor tank sitting on some plywood in the bed. I am very happy with the 30' of driving I did tonight. Clutch smooth as butter. Idles nice and even. I plan to pull the pickup box next for access to rear brakes and chassis/spring work. I also found four jailbar truck 'under seat' gas tanks in my search today. 3 were easily fixable, but the last one I stumbled on was like new. Pics to follow.

Your "salting things away" is paying large dividends to you. The only thing I ever salted away was an old '63 C**** coupe in 1970. That worked out kind of well for me several years later.

Re: Winter without a project?
Ya Pete, it works out well for me. A couiple of Christmas's back my wife gave me a little clip on book light. I stuck it into some of the gas tanks for a look see. One of the four was at lest ten lbs heavier. It was sealed all around with a black coating which resembled tar. It was also the best looking on the exterior. This may have been an early tank coating, but with the new ethenol gas, why risk it. The one I plan to use I may still put on a slow rotisserie with some hardened screws or something for abrasive this weekend. Also been playing with some seriously flat green acrylic paint. Truck has one door somebody stripped back to it's original black. I have a green door in good shape, but the current door is straighter, has matching key to ignition and an excellent black interior and great glass. I bought the chalky paint in an antique green and whadya know it is a very good match. It claims to be interior paint but 4 days ago I painted an old steel door panel, let dry overnight and placed it at the bottom of a mud puddle in front of the shop. As of noon today it is plenty solid, no softening or lifting. I then swatched some on one of my old sweatshirts and the washer and dryer should tell a tale. Certainly not for everybody, but Sugarmaker, they make a couple of blues. Mix and match if needed, but mine as shown is straight from the jar..

Re: Winter without a project?
I think this pic was shown earlier in this thread, but this is the black door I am going to paint on Saturday. It's pretty common to have one bad panel on an otherwise original car that you don't want to restore. What to do?

Re: Winter without a project?
Gary,
That paint looks perfect! You nailed it even the edge of the door and the black showing through the paint! Got any faded Washington blue in case I do my door?? You are riding high for sure! Your making great strides on your winter truck project. Very nice documentation. Is that a brush on paint?? I will google it. I did and it said for interior use only. But not sure it would not work on a old truck door and provide many years of service? Sure looks like it could get close. You planning to brush this on? I found several blues 36338 and 36332 That may be close? Humm? may order one of each of these? Hard to tell in a bottle what its going to look like in the truck. Did you buy these at Wally World? Regards, Chris

Re: Winter without a project?
Bought on amazon. I am working on some 'hybrid' paint jobs with rustoleum satin finishes underneath and a dusting of the chalk paint over. Either way, your old Washinton Blue wont hold up in the weather either. That's why God created the shed.....

Re: Winter without a project?
Drove outa the shop yesterday. Still only has front brakes, but stops fine. I found some 2x10s for temporary running boards. It was tough climbing in and out. All systems work as they should, but haven't been outa second gear yet.. Seems Washington didn't issue a license plate in '46 so they used the 45 plate for 2 years. I am going to buy a '45 plate on Ebay today so I can hit the road.
Today it's re-stuffing the seat with some foam rubber and a U-Haul style moving blanket I bought yesterday at 'The Exchange' which is a volunteer run junk store alongside the dump. If you have some good stuff in your dump run you can donate there and keep it out of the landfill. Gonna slit the black vinyl around the back and attempt the stuffing and then use flex-tape (as seen on tv) to repair. The stuff is really sticky and a tough rubber with peel off backing. Will clean the area with laquer thinner first.

Re: Winter without a project?
Yes the michelins are recaps... We called them 'Bandags' back in the day. They were Legit, but just the tread without sidewall rubber.. My red tonner has a set of new 'store bought' michelin 7.50 x 17 radials. They are 350.00 apiece but I bought them from a logger who's boss couldn't pay him so he gave him a motorhome. In the motorhome were six of these new tires. Unfortrunately he had already sold 4 of them for a Benjamin apiece, Woulda loved all six.

Re: Winter without a project?
All the stuff from the dump fit into the seat. I am still working on the seat back and have a few things to do with the gas tank before this phase is complete. Then pull the box and work on the back end. I filled up the cotton batting that was missing with parts of the uhaul pad and then topped off with the 1" foam camping pad. Carefully stuffed under the naugahyde and them stapled onto the funny steel tack rail around the seat base. I'm gonna say this tack rail is tightly woven horse hair crimped into a u shaped channel such as will hold a carpet tack and later re upholstery jobs like mine , the third, holds a staple. Yo re-use the naugahyde I stapled the pereimeter over the top of a string of electrical wire. In othger words , instead of shooting the staples directly into the naugahyde, I ran a string of lamp cord auound the perimeter and bridged the staples witrh my pnuematic stapler using 1/2" staples.

Re: Winter without a project?
Tonight I was coming home from a jobsite in my 92 f350 and on our gravel road I encountered the 10' downspout that fell off my truck on the last test drive. Looked like it had been run over at least 3 times and chucked into the brush.... Funny, I had just picked up the muffler and pipe for the real system I'm gonna build. None of my car repair buddies had an exhaust system behind their shop. Scrap prices have finally been rising. Really sucks to have to go 'store bought'.

Re: Winter without a project?
No swing set tubing or picnik table legs available? In my neighborhood, most of us have been here a long time, 45 years for me. There are three of us who do a lot of fabricating, and also have a very good stash of "junk" and tools. When I need something simple like one piece of steel, or need a reamer/tap/drill bit, etc, that I dont have, you just go take it/ borrow it. No locked doors, and they do the same to me. Its an understanding between those of us who can contribute back. Then...there's the ones who sweep the floor and throw away all the nuts and bolts then come to me when they need something. Its 6 miles to town, and they usually dont have that special thing you want. But...To most, I look like a hoarder, well, unless they want something

Re: Winter without a project?
The firewood rack was 1 1/2" Bummer. Muffler is on. Real quiet. Did a compression check. Never seen one like this. Starting with #1..... 123, 122. 121,120, 119, 118. Good numbers for sure, but an interesting sequence. And my Sears Allstate vacuum gauge mounted on the intake manifold is now showing 21" steady at a slow idle. I think I mentioned the engine came from a totally restored 51 panel that got backed into hard in a parking lot and totalled. Lucky me.

Heck, I already bought two.... One in about 1998 in Canada and once down here about 15 years ago. I didn't win.

Re: Winter without a project?
Got a little time in the afternoon sun. I had hacked the rear bumper off to steal the bed from 'uncle oscar' because the farmer had welded it onto the frame AND the bed/fenders. When I mounted it on this truck there was a huge gap so my kid and I went down and torched the middle section out and welded it back in. I am still gonna pull the box to do rear brakes etc and at that time I will make some serious mounts between both parts for serious towing, which I have been known to do.

Last ticket I bought I was soooo close. Only missed winning by 5 numbers. Rats. I figure I'd be better off flushing my money down the toilet. When the septic tank gets pumped at least I'd get my money back.

Re: Winter without a project?
Not exactly.... My work load has been very demanding in the wood shop. Trying to finish up a 3 month project so I can start 4 more that are on the books. I keep trying to learn how to say NO, but the island is being taken over by techies who have fled the cities and the covid and can work from home, and there are many from our generation who are retiring here. On Tuesday I met with the granddaughter of the founder of a certain Seattle aviation company and her contractor, and took on a set of cabinets from reclaimed lumber to be installed mid-spring. I did however, work on Old Green til 10:30 on Wednesday night, as that's my wife's 24 hour shift night. Finished up the rear bumper and a few other small tasks.

Pretty cool table, is it new/made to look old, or in for restoration? After the 24hr shift I hope you make breakfast at least for the poor woman, maybe wash and wax her FJ 40 !

Re: Winter without a project?
Gary,
The bumper looks very original. You may have to come to Albion PA to patina the truck door if I ever get to that project. That is a sturdy looking table. The vertical board under neath is interesting? Whats the back story on that unit? Is the drawer functional? Regards, Chris

Re: Winter without a project?
The table is a center island for a kitchen made from mostly salvaged wood last week and painted with rustoleum rusty metal primer, then Ace hardware gray primer, then an acrylic water based dark gray, then glazed over with minwax walnut stain. The top is 2 1/4" elm, cut here on the island. I used to do a lot of huge cabinet projects with a crew of 3-4, but now I stay very busy with doors, tables and accent pieces in this style.

Re: Winter without a project?
Gary,
A compromise might be a outlet at both ends on the kitchen side only? Cords could then each the front side too? We only have one outlet on our island and sometimes could use another one. It looks grand! Your sure have the antiquing looks down pat! Ok your teasing us with the sliding barn doors....... Regards, Chris

Re: Winter without a project?
So strange... I had a long conversation with the client on the phone this morning and I suggested this exact same thing, Two outlets on the kitchen side. There is a chase there that can place them outboard, near the legs. I also didn't want the electrician to cut the holes. Some are good at it, others not so much. To get back to my truck thread it's 10:38 pm and I just came in from the unheated shop and looked at the outside thermometer and it is 35 degrees. The garage doors are wide open because they always are. My wife is on the mainland visiting her sister. This afternoon I made a brakelight/tail light from a model T housing I found and some new double pole guts I bought a few years ago. I had a good glass lens, but no retainer wire spring. I made one from a gallon paint can wire handle (good stuff). Then I went to town for dinner and a couple beers, came home and wired it up through the old switch I threaded onto the new master cylinder and after a while I had a nice bright 12 v brake light. Now I can sleep in peace, knowing folks behind me will know I am applying my brakes when I finally take this thing out to the county road. I also installed my '47 WA license plate on the rear bumper. I have yet to apply this plate to a YOM registration, but gotta be soon!

Re: Winter without a project?
Gary,
You had a very productive day on the truck lighting system! I love to make something out of nothing, or bring something back from the edge! Having good strong lights was very important to me on my dump truck. Yea I broke all the rules, but I want to be safe, as I do plan to drive it like you too. Thanks for the update! We may hit 40 degrees F today?? Yesterday I was glad my shop doors were closed temp was in the teens with a west wind of 40 mph! Regards, Chris

Re: Winter without a project?
We finished up our regular work we scheduled for today in the woodshop by 3:00, so my son and I hoisted the bed off the truck and then we moved the woodie to another shed and now the tonner is parked alongside it's bed which is on about 16" of blocks. I started cutting out rust and made some patches but about 9:00 pm I caved in because it was about 26 degrees at the time.

Re: Winter without a project?
Today after work I came up to the house at 4 and stoked the fire, fed the animals and laid on the couch and read my book with the sunlight coming over my shoulder and my feet facing the wood stove. I need to learn to savor my projects because the warm spring days are right around the corner and I will need something to wrench on out in front of the shop. Turns out a bit of afternoon book readin' is really nice too! And Pete, the pictures are so much easier to enjoy when you use your magic to blow them up!

Re: Winter without a project?
So over the weekend I got my exhaust system installed. A friend of mine owns a great auto repair shop here with a setup for mufflers/exhaust and he bent me up a tailpipe. I got that in yesterday and today I bent up my rear brake lines, removed all the rusty ones and got most everything plumbed in for having rear brakes. Been running my dirt road with just fronts. Only problem, the hose kit I ordered came with a rear hose 4" too short. It's about 13" and old was about 17". Not sure what napa will have. They are set up each end for 1/4" brake tube. Maybe napa will have a universal or something that will fit. I have my new wheel cylinders etc for the rear brakes and it will be good to have four brakes before I hit the county road. No pics of brake work, and nothing exciting, but here's my tailpipe. It's not a '32 roadster or 36 phaeton barnfind, it's just a piece of 2" pipe with a couplke of bends..... But it helped to wile away a few hours on an otherwise uneventful weekend.I guess I will have to dredge up my exhaust pictures.

All 4 tires were on it when I bought it and in case you have looked for 'em lately, 7.50 x 17s don't grow on trees. Thanks for noticing.

Re: Winter without a project?
Gary,
Tail pipe looks great from here. Doesn't have to be complicated or stock to function well. And it takes just as much work to get it in place. Heat from the fire sounds great! Thanks for the update on the truck, and the pictures. All those little moves add up to a finished unit. I am sure you will find plenty to do as the weather warms also! Regards, Chris

Re: Winter without a project?
Take a hole saw and cut some rubber washers out of the sidewall of an old tire, then, put one under the hanger bracket on the rear cross member so it won't resonate exhaust sounds and vibration thru the frame.

Re: Winter without a project?
Thanks, after my diesel converted tonner I want this old gal to be as quiet as a mouse. Would it be better to use a strap made from old belting for the hanger itself? But... it's way easier to make the grommet.

Re: Winter without a project?
I always save the rubber washers from shock absorbers when I replace them. They work well for tail pipe hanger insulation as well as other assorted tasks.

Re: Winter without a project?
Some might say a rubber strap would be better, but rubber today is crap, and you, like me, would have an old tire and a hole saw so the job is done now for free.

What's a 'shock absorber'? JK, that's a great idea. And the hole in the hanger is sized for the shoulder on the gromett and no metal touches metal. Pure genius!

Re: Winter without a project?
I do have some belting that looks like a sheet of tire with many plies. I also have an all steel hanger just aft of the muffler I will swap out along with it. Whatever I do with it it will cost nothing. I am waiting for better weather so I can pressure wash, then wire wheel the rest of the chassis outdoors.

Re: Winter without a project?
I’m for rubber washers on rigid hangers, or I save hangers with the short piece of rubber between the strap and where the clamp goes. I always fab my hangers out of something. Exhaust and wiring are the fun stuff.......Mark

Re: Winter without a project?
You can see the start of my wiring hanging off the left frame rail. I had a brake light all wired up in case I took a spin on the county road, but snipped it when I decided it was time to pull the bed. 12 gauge 3 wire extension cord. It's amazing how many I have pulled outa the trash on jobsites. I have all colors for the different circuits.

Re: Winter without a project?
Got a start this evening on the rear brakes. My wife has a late shift so I just got in at 9:40 pm here. She stoked the fire in the house before she left so it';s nice and warm in the house. Not in the shop.... Anyhow I got a couple pics of the right side rear brakes. Pretty normal stuff. I was thrilled to see about 3/16" of bonded lining on those big rear shoes. Everything hydraulic and the oil seals are here for replacement. I'm pretty sure the 3/16" will last my lifetime. Will check out the left side tomorrow after work.

Re: Winter without a project?
Good news ! My wife tends to "forget" to load the stove unless its 20 below. I cut, split, stack in the woodshed that is 15' from the basement door, carry in 3 arm loads per day, stack again in the house to where all you have to do is pick up a piece, rotate 180* and put it in the stove. its still too much work I guess, as often I get to the house in the evening and fire is out, basement is 55*. Sorry, I'll quit whining now

Gary,
Brake job is looking good in there. Still some material. I agree 3/16 will be fine for a long long time! Ahhh Wood heat! Wife stoked the wood fire for 40 years while I was at work or not home. We made it! Yep miss the wood heat but not the work! Regards, Chris

Today it was sunny and warm so I fired up the mighty H six and parked in front of the shop to do the other side's brakes.

And a few more pics.... Just had to add the one of matching the door color. This is the first time I got a pic of it in the natural outdoor light and I am happy how I got a decent match. AND, I can call my buddy and say it's time to bleed the brakes!

It is indeed 'springing'.... Lilacs are budding, so are the alders and a few others. We have a very short winter here.

Re: Winter without a project?
Had a great weekend with few 'disruptions' so I finalized the rear brakes. The parking brakes took way longer than expected. Some PO had them adjusted all very wonky with the main cable loose and the arteries out to each brake tightened all the way. It is some sort of 'ballet' to get everything in sync and working as it should. With that all worked out I called my old buddy John to come by this afternoon for the bleeding sequence. We have been friends for almost 40 years and brake bleeding is always a way to get together. He's a single guy and doesn't cook a lot, so a home cooked meal makes it worth the 24 mile round trip from town. So it was yet another Sunday night after brake bleeding evening. Ravin's menu was roast pork with mashed potatoes and peas. I'm here to report a grand time was had by all and on our test run I mashed the brakes hard on the steep downhill and all was good. Don't get much better than that where I come from.

Re: Winter without a project?
Well, it's back to the front clip. Today after work it was nice out so I begged my son to stay for a 'half hour' and help me remove the center grill panel from the front fenders. We had just gotten back from a plywood run and had a bunch of 4x8 cardboard so we set that on the ground for kneeling etc, and rolled the clip upside down onto it. I told my son to spray the bolts, (like 30 of them) with pb blaster while I wheeled the torch over. Well, when I got back he had a puddle in each upside down fender. The hose was handy and we needed it for sure. We unbolted what we could, but even in these ideal conditions some got rounded over. At that point the blue wrench came into play. I really need some 6 point box wrenches!

6 point 3/8 socket on a 3/8 breaker bar so you can wiggle back and forth, once its broke loose move on to the next one while that one cools off. Carry on

Re: Winter without a project?
Kid likes to use the makita 1/2" drive 18 v impact and of course it's 'after work' so friends are texting him and he wants to go fast. That's ok. It ended well. Earlier in the day he sharpend the mower blades, so in the later hours of light I go down and do a few heart healthy laps with the mower. Ok, 3 more laps..... If I don't show up later call 911

Re: Winter without a project?
OOps, I forgot to report back. After about 8 hrs of regular work, then front clip demolition and mowing, I sat on the couch and fell fast asleep instantly. Oh and the puddles seen in the fenders are water. I only ignited a few small areas where some PB remained.

Re: Winter without a project?
Thanks Mart. It was a tough decision about breaking down that complete front clip but now I am very glad we did. The rad support needed to move forward for the six, and the pan ahead of the rad needs to be replaced with the short version anyhow. The fenders I'm using are in extremely good condition. Couple shallow dents and one hairline crack in the rolled bead of one fender opening. The bottoms at the running boards are excellent.

Re: Winter without a project?
I have been reading "The Keys to Metal Bumping" and a method for repairing tears in a fender is described. The book was published in the early 50's, so they are using an oxy/acetylene torch to make the repair. The unique step was how they used the filler rod to protect the edge of the bead from being melted away creating a weak spot. I am going to have to practice the technique on fender to see how it goes.
This may not be as big an issue using more modern methods of joining metal, like MIG and TIG. |

Re: Winter without a project?
I got my first torch set at about 18, I'm sure the biggest tool purchase of my life at the time. I welded in many patch panels with the torch. They always warped the panel quite badly, but as a kid we thought that was part of the deal. Hammer it out best you can, and thank god for bondo. Now, I see some very skilled folks who still use a torch exclusively with the same results as any skilled mig or tig welder here. Lots of English race car body builder youtube videos out there. Still like my torch for exhaust work, except its getting harder to see, so cheating with bad looking mig welds are becoming more my style.

Thanks Mart, I thoroughly enjoyed that You Tube video, filled with a lot of good information. I was expecting gas welding, but that man is one fine TIG welder.

Re: Winter without a project?
I think there may be a foot pedal involved, much like walking and chewing gum at the same time, and That's hard enough. Chris, did you see my Oliver/White tractor in the last group of pics? Looks kinda new but it's 50 this year. Some Oliver guy was going nuts because I have one in the very rare 'terex green'. Great, now I have more 'patina' to protect.... Ask some Oliver guy you might know. If I paint it for protection I would do something like new caterpillar yellow, but to an Oliver nut, that could be blasphemy.

Re: Winter without a project?
Gary,
A guy can get real serious about his tractors too. I have one Allis all dolled up, and several in their work clothes! I like them all if they start and run well and do the job I ask. Looking forward to some tractor time soon too. Maybe spring plow days. Also tractor shows and tractor pulls too. I like some of the Olivers too, but have never been around them to run them. Yea they could get ansy with CAT yellow on a Oliver! Just saying..... Now if your protecting it maybe they will let it slide?? Regards, Chris

Re: Winter without a project?
Once there was a story circulating about a guy that put a flathead V8 in an early corvette..... Guys huddled around at the car show and said how smooth etc. Popped the hood latch! You all know the rest. My Hero BTW, Duh.

Re: Winter without a project?
That's what I'm talking about! I'm sure there were some shocked bowtie guys. Heck we have to put up with a lot of very handsome early fords hiding one of those (yawn) sbc under the hood. I spent some time over the weekend working on the green tonner and am concentrating on finalizing everything under the hood while I can still plant my tired hind end on a front tire and turn some wrenches. Today it was stiffening the alternator bracket, altering the slotted adjustment arm for it, new gasket at headpipe to manifold joint, a new and better upper radiator hose I picked from the wall rack at napa yesterday, adjusted choke cable etc, etc. All so easy now. It's not hard to see why so many guys like those fenderless hot rods.

Re: Winter without a project?
Well a whole weekend went by without working on big green. Then today the sun was flooding into the face of the red shop, but alas, too busy in the wood shop. I am at a turning point with these impossible to find long pickup running boards. Fix my originals with lots of really deep pits, ok, some are actually holes, or make another set of wood ones like I made for the tonner panel. Painted with rustoleum rusty metal primer they look like nice straight original ones. My plywood delivery come on Wednesday so I gotta decide tomorrow.....

Re: Winter without a project?
Thank you Pete! On the panel truck the body comes right down to the running boards so I made these boards flat. On the pickup the cab and bed are like 3 or 4" above the running boards so you see the concave curve in the running board leading up to the frame top. I think with the pickup I will need this curved section so maybe I quarter a section of 6" pvc or abs pipe and rabbet the running board to accept it flush. I will probably get it dialed in tonight at 3:30 am when my brain is spinning and I am trying to fall back to sleep after my 3:00 pee break. Sheesh, not enough hours in a day.

Re: Winter without a project?
3/4 exterior plywood for the most part, 1 1/2" doug fir outside nosing, the ribs are 3/8" wide maple strips with a 3/8 bullnose cutter in my router table. Then a 3/8 straight cutter in the plywood. The maple strips needed to be rounded in the other direction because of the vertical cut in the board. Nothing fit perfect , I did it all on a saturday and epoxied them in, smeared the glue off with a rag and used a quart and a half of rusty primer to fill in any other gaps. Woodworkers LOVE a paint grade project. Best part of all is they are the straightest running boards to exist after 75 years of abuse. Woodworking tools prefer to go straight down the board.

Re: Winter without a project?
OK, the little doll chair I made last weekend for one of my grandaughter's 4th birthday. One of the hens laid a minature egg last Sunday, so my wife posed this photo. The big door is for a family estate about 2 miles from us on the waterfront. This is the entry door and is a 4-0 x 7-4 door that is 2 1/4" thick. The vertical stiles are 2 outer pieces of 3/4"old doug fir resawn from 3 x 11 floor joists from a 1906 warehouse. The 3/4" core was resawn from 3x12 structural glu-lams. This sandwich is laminated on a 6x6 steel I beam ti insure straight. The inset panels are a mix of species planed to 3/8" and laminated onto both sides of 1/2" marine plywood. This in done in our vacuum press which is a 4x8' heavy vinyl envelope, backed with grooved plywood and a very powerful and heavy vacuum pump assembly. We set it up as needed on our 4 x 8 work table. The door joints are a a spline of the same 1/2" ply and 3/8 x 10" star drive construction lags counterbored for a 3/4" dowel. The hall of doors shows what this big door will look like painted white. The white doors we built 27 of them about 7 years ago for a project on Whidbey island.

Re: Winter without a project?
Been welding up rust pits in the last of the daylight after work. In a field of big rust pits I wire cup brushed the area then heavy coat rustoleum rusty metal primer. I then took a squeege and smoothed a load of sikeflex 241 marine polyurethane adhesive sealant over the clean, dried rustoleum. Filled the big rust pits really well. This will be the third time I have used this product this way. It sands quite well and picture it as a very tenacious rubber bondo.

Re: Winter without a project?
The propeller shaft was a great help! Couldn't find my square of copper. Some of this running board's surface looked like the surface of the moon. The polyurethane 'bondo' worked well on the driver side running board, and should do as well on the passenger side now that most of the holes were welded shut. My trucks reside in sheds and don't often get driven in the rain. I use my disposable chevies for that duty. As a kid living in New England I used a lot of bondo to repair rust in door bottoms just to continue driving in the salt the next day. I would drive the rust in with a ball peen hammer, smooth on the goop, sand it off... You know the drill. Couple weeks later the blisters rear their ugly heads...... I do have quite a bit of faith in my process of knotted cup brush, grinder, heavy brush on rustoleum rusty metal primer, sikaflex, sand flush, more of the primer and finally brush on a load of satin black with a bit of sand through. In re-reading this, maybe I shoulda made another set of wooden ones. Let's see how these hold up. A good chance they will still look the same when I'm six feet under

Re: Winter without a project?
Gary,
Happy Easter. Reading your post on the work you do to preserve the running boards! Yes sounds like they will last a VERY long time!! Was thinking of you when I was checking kingpins in my 32. No I dont plan on doing anything with them! Your going to have this truck ready for summer events! Great following along with your progress too. Thanks for taking the time to post the updates. I look forward to them! I am not a wood worker but enjoy your projects such as the doors! And the small chair.C Regards, Chris

Re: Winter without a project?
Got the running boards installed this weekend. Bigger job than I anticipated. I was able to repair the lower front of both rear fenders. They were pretty good but had some cracks to weld up. The running boards were almost 'throw aways', but as previously stated they are as rare as hen's teeth (or tonner rear fenders). I used a combination of 1/4" steel rod and 1/8 x 1 1/4 steel strap to rebuild the running board's ends. Lots of welding of rust pits, then the priming and filling of many large pits with the sikaflex polyurethane. After priming I brought the parts up to the living room for the sikaflex application. My wife was on a 24 hr shift so I was in the clear. I tried a couple of home made devices to evenly spread the sticky goo over the rust pits, but settled on my wife's brand new silicone bladed window squeege. 7" blade, nice handle. A thing of beauty. Stuff went on like cream cheese. Up and over the ribs when I had to was a challenge, but most damage was on the flat. Immediately upon completion I went straight to amazon and ordered a 2 pack of the same 9 dollar window tools. Now I have a backup. In closing, let me be the first to say these 'boards were not repaired in an approved manner, but are an experiment. They are a simple bolt on part and if I should happen upon a nice set I will swoop down upon them with outstretched arms!

Re: Winter without a project?
Any flat paint hides a multitude of sins. Tonight I got back from a jobsite and the red shop was bathed in a rare spring sunshine so I dug in and finalized my last running board issues. Next is attend to a couple of issues like manifold gaskets while they are at eye level and no fenders in the way.... Then it's assemble the front clip and get this old jalopy in one piece. Weather forecast looks good to go to county seat in Friday Harbor on Friday. We can take the 'YOM '47 plate to the DMV there and get it registered. It will need bed wood and lots more, but that kind of stuff is stacked all around the ten acres, along with a bunch of jailbar hoods etc, etc.

Re: Winter without a project?
It has been a cold, rainy spring, if one could even call this a spring. I have been totally swamped with work in the shop and combine these two factors and my normal fun in the sun after work has taken a back seat. Not to worry, I am never deterred for too long. Old Green is still not licensed but we went for an extended drive on the dirt roads around here this afternoon. So now it's time to get some front sheet metal on. After reading about Kube always installing the hood first, it made a lot of sense to me. So today I found the hood has a couple of problems. I knew the center spear was missing, but I found a mount for the driver's side hinge was cracked off and missing. I dragged my worst looking of 5 hoods up from the lower yard as it had a good mount. Tomorrow The sun is supposed to return so gonna take most of the day off and weld the mount onto my hood. As for that center spear I actually need two, so I had one to copy. Make sure you bring a magnet to 'Gary's Used Truck Lot'. Or not.

Re: Winter without a project?
Finally a Sring weekend. After I repaired the hood I got the rest of the wood crossmembers in the bed. Seems every one is a different species. Used a pnuematic needle scaler to clean the angle and bed sides and unloaded a can of ospho down the joint. Next morning a tube of marine polyurethane sikaflex down each side, nice and deeplike into the bedside/floor angle seam. Now for bedwood. Have some good solid douglas fir floor joists with some weathering on them, so as not to spoil my image. Next week I will fit them to the bedsides around the fenders. I have new looking 8' bed strips that came with a parts truck many years back. My folks were both Yankees from many generations in SE Massachusetts where they said 'Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without'. Amen

Re: Winter without a project?
Been doing some welding and patching on the door bottoms and finding more old boards that will look right for the bed wood. I have 2 almost pristine green doors but this old beater is just fine with some repaired ones. If I end up keeping it band loving it, I will just drive out the hinge pins and swap them out. These both have good hardware and the ignition key fits the right door and I really like that. Time will tell. Easy retrofit some day. In the mean time experimenting some more with the marine poly adhesive sika flex and working on my match for the truck's patina. The old red 226 six has really come to life with more running, MMO and some sea foam. Most of what I thought was carb and ignition tured out to be a hung up intake valve. It was intermittent. And as so often happens, it was overlapped with plug fouling from too much MMO. I am really surprised to find in some fairly definative testing that the brand new NGK plugs fouled early and so I replaced them one at a time with used champion H 10s and AC 45s or Autolites, but a mismatch and for the first time in over a month it once again runs like it did on my run stand.... Like a watch. Next is the milling of the bed wood for the stack of strips I have been hoarding. They have the round holes made for the serrated neck carraige bolts. They would be 1/4-20s. I have two so I know they work. What's a good source for these? Thanks, GB

Gary,
Wonderful documentation of the progress on your winter tuck project! The wood in the bed floor looks just right too. I did not realize that the one spear is non metalic! I like that! Regards, Chris

Re: Winter without a project?
Got all the bed wood milled today to accept the bed strips. Used some gold colored screws and bolts, but they are shiney and ugly. Will post some pics when I get some rusty or blackened fasteners installed.....

Re: Winter without a project?
They unscrew very easily so I cooked the heads to a glowing red and drove em back contented. Dang, now I'm getting limericks in my head. There was an old Geezer from Orcas......
I know to some this is not a proper restoration, and I agree wholeheartedly. It's just fixing up an old truck to be safe and reliable and serviceable without looking like much was done to it (if anything). As noted by reading this thread, most everything of importance was addressed from engine, radiator, hydraulics, kingpins, carb, ignition, lots of welding and fab work. Etc. That's why I post this stuff, because most build threads are all about making an old vehicle like brand new again. About 40 years ago I did that with a David Bradley walk behind tractor and I kicked myself over it many times. Years ago I came up with an analogy of 'After my carhart shop coat got faded and scuffed up from years of work, would I go pick up some rit dye and turn it back to dark brown and then iron it before going into town.?..... End of rant. Should have stuck to limericks! Stay tuned

Re: Winter without a project?
Put them in a bucket and guide your dog to them. Nothing adds rust to metal then dog piss. Or sink them and fill. Not a fan of the deck screws but you made them work. Nice work and solution!
Boards look really really nice! love them. So nice!!! Last edited by Tinker; 05-30-2022 at 10:34 PM. |

Re: Winter without a project?
I have to agree carraige bolts look better. But the strips I had were drilled round already and the majority of the holes went right across the 3" thick wood crossmembers. The climbing in and out and rolling under the truck to place washers and nuts was more than I cared to deal with. The screws were effortless other than the time spent kneeling in the box. There were 2 rows of holes that weren't over a wood crossmember so I used a 4" wide strip of full 1" form plywood applied crossways from underneath. No splitting with that plywood, and the strips seated nicely.

Re: Winter without a project?
Been making some progress on Old Green. Did the por 15 tank lining over the weekend. Takes a long time with all those steps. Painted the outside of the tank with some silver paint I had. Also painted the ford script on the tailgate, re-did my exhaust hangers with the reinforced rubber type (huge improvement) worked on wheel and door patina touch up, and tidy'ed up engine bay stuff before those big fenders get in the way! With the new lic plate will be running this thing into the big city of Eastsound before ya know it.

Re: Winter without a project?
It's been quite a few months since I last worked on Big Green. Summer was spent terrorizing the county roads in the RPU, often referred to as the Foyota or the Blue Bomber. But as fall comes on, an old man's interest turns to the mechanical things in life. Yesterday I assembled a front clip for the '46 tonner from two fenders that came off a 1 1/2 ton hay truck from Twisp Wa. These were mated to the front bib that was original to this truck. That process on a jailbar truck is no picnic. The fenders are in remarkable condition, but I feel they show too much surface rust on the crowns, even for me. I may introduce some red primer, black rustoleum and chalky green into the mix once I see how this looks installed.
Today I plan on welding up some cracks that are more accessible at this stage and wire wheeling and heavy rustoleum rusty metal primer (Por 15 doesn't use the needed fish oil as a base) on the mating surfaces and undersides/bracketry of these fenders. Hoping I can get my son here this afternoon to help me install it but it currently dangles from a winch cable so it wouldn't be the first time I drove into a clip and lowered it down onto the chassis. The various greens actually match up very well, but the LED lights in the shop make the parts look blue.

Re: Winter without a project?
Got that front clip on last night. I felt sorta like those people we see on a documentary doing something that makes you really sore and uncomfortable (like climbing Mt Everest). And when asked "Why do you do it?" answer with 'Because it's there". Well this is not Mt Everest by any means, but It took me about 8 hours working by myself on the concrete. Much of this time on my knees while prying stretching, banging and bending sheet metal from 3 different donors to ultimately conform to the chassis of a fourth truck. I don't know what I'd do without my alignment pins. I'm sure steelworkers have a name for these tapered rods with a flat hook on the back end. There must be 50 fasteners under there, many with coil springs and a fender washer on one side, a regular washer then a castelated nut and cotter pin. The fasteners are equal parts 1/4", 1/2" and 9/16" with a few 5/8" and 3/4" thrown in. Some coarse , some fine. These were all gleaned piece by piece from my stash of ford bolts and 5 coffee cans of mixed bolts, a drawer full of washers and a dog dish hubcap of mixed nuts. Every socket I dropped rolled to the opposite side of the truck. My good craftsman 3/8 drive siezed up in locked mode. I quit at 11 pm, mostly done, but had a good 3 hours of wrenching in this morning before work. Built some drawers, went to an aftrernoon meeting about a new project, and finally got home and did a few laps around the ten acres in the 'complete' truck. No squeaks, only rattle was the tailgate chains. Brakes, steering, engine, tranny all excellent. Just what I needed... Another Jailbar Tonner! Sure it was a lonely parts truck for over six years, no bed, no drivetrain, no seat, no wiring, all sitting on rotten tires, but it had a title and a good face and 'It was There'.

Re: Winter without a project?
Thanks, I did my yearly floor sweep before as I knew I'd be rolling around on it a lot. Still gotta install that fuel tank before I make the initial town run. Working gauges and some lighting would also be a plus. Funny, the truck looks almost the same in the 'before' (page one) and 'after' shots, but I know it's been carefully and safely overhauled from stem to stern.

I put a nice set of ford script tonner hub caps on it but I haven't decided if they look right on this old brood mare....

Re: Winter without a project?
GB,
Your work is a lot like mine.)Only you do a way better job!!) The tonner looks like a very very nice barn find truck that is fully operational. Love the look! You have put much work into this winter project! Thanks for bringing us along for the ride too. Always look forward to your work, ideas, and creativity on these trucks! Regards, Chris
