Gas tank welt installation

I am in the process of installing the gas tank and cowl welt on my 1929 150A Station Wagon and need to know what is the best method for a fine point car. The gas tank,cowl and windshield piler have all been painted separately and now need to be assembled with the welting. What is the best way to paint the welt the body color, do I mask around the welt after installation or paint the whole assemby and sand and rub it out after assembly. The body is painted with Lacquer
