Default Long time no see till now!

Hello all, finnaly done with college so now its time to get back on the AA.

I started on the rear axle today where i discovered a few things:

The good is everything moves and looks to be in great shape

The bad is i do believe i have a axle seal leak

How would one remove this much oil/grease/dirt from here???

Looks like it is time to hoist it on a the trailer and take it to the local car wash. Spray it with some grease remover and let it soak first. Onther option it to get out the puddy knife and start scraping. Put a bucket under it and scrape the knofe off on the edge of the bucket and dissassemble as you go. Chnces are the linings are to grease soaked to use even if they are still thick enough. No easy road with that much of a leak. Had a simular condition with the chassis for the Delivery. Good to see you have made it back even with the changed Format. Rod

A steam cleaner would be nice, but since I don't have one I use a pan of gas and a good stiff parts cleaning brush and compressed air with a good blow gun.

After WWII they used cosmoline to preserve the rifles etc. Must be the AA used something different. LOL. I wouldn't use gas but I would use kerosene or fuel oil.

yea that was my plan to load it up on the trailer, load it up with degreaser of all kinds and go to the carwash down the street.

Would anyone have a diagram showing how the AA brakes go together? i have an idea just by looking at t and the diagrams of regular A brakes but not sure how to get it all down so i can take the backing plates off and find out how to replace the axle seal

Look at it this way, the grease helps protect the steel parts!

I used my power washer on my brakes (put a feed bucket under to capture the bigger chunks.)

It was MESSY!

Wow, the good point is that NOTHING should be rusted! Degreaser and a car wash, but don't use one too close to home, then take some more pictures if you are unsure about how it goes back together....

Looks just like the brakes on my spare rear, making 1 rear out of 2 and at least they are preserved.

I would think some brake clean, scraper, rags and good old fashioned elbow grease would clean them up. At least thats what I have planned.

Also plan on replacing the linings since they are soaked with gear oil.

Good luck and keep us posted on the outcome.

lol ill do it after the guy is gone (24 hr deal lol) i sprayed some degreaser on it and let it sit for 10 min and just washed it off with a garden hose, seemed to take care of the lightweight stuff. gonna need alot more degreaser and pressure washer for the hard stuff.

yes i graduated magna cum laude with a bachelors in electronics technology from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Within that degree its focused on industrial electronics (PLC's, robot arms, motors, motor controllers, etc) and biomedical electronics (repair install calibrate of defibrillators, ultrasounds, IV pumps, ventilators, etc)

These were very well preserved. Too bad they welded in the studs and ripped up the carriers. They were nice and shiny also. Rod

Please don't take it to the car wash. It really makes a mess for the next guy and creates a problem for all of us if they see that a Model A was the cause.

Instead, go buy a few spray cans of Carburetor & Choke Cleaner. Put a pan under the part to catch the drippings and then spray it several times. You will be surprised how easily the gunk comes off with no messy grease thrown around everywhere like you would get with a pressure washer.

Are you saying they will ban 350's also. I see alot of local guys take their sbc's to the car wash and give them a good cleaning before tearing them down for rebuild. I doubt it would be blamed on a model A or cause the hobbie any harm. I always devote the last 90 seconds to floor clean up so no mess is left for the next guy. Its called being curtious. Rod

but yea the foaming engine degreaser spray can stuff seems to work pretty good.

"1929 Model AA - Need all sheet metal parts! "

The cab is the same as a pickup and the front fenders are the same for all Model A's of that year. The hood I believe is the same for any Ford build body style for that year. That would be phaetons, coupes, tudors, and trucks
