Default Flatattack heads on a 99A Mercury engine

Hoping someone in the Barn can add some more light to this discussion. I have had some feedback from HAMB members, however I am still looking for more information.

Background, I have built a 99A Mercury stroker engine. I have a pair of Kong and a pair of Flatattack heads 8BA style. I also have a set of original 24 stud cast iron heads with the centre outlet but I prefer not to use them at this stage. I am after a little bling if I can get the 8BA style heads to work.

Has anyone had experience fitting 8BA style heads to the 99A engine? If so are there modifications I need to make to either the heads or the block to adapt them?

Hopeful David

take a head gasket from the 99A engine and place it over the 8BA style heads, that will show you what needs to be done. I think it involves plugging some holes

I don't see a problem putting the heads on the block, plumbing maybe. However, These heads have a large combustion chamber, and the CR might be quite low. Might want to CC them.

The 8BA family has several different coolant ports at the front that the 59 series and earlier don't have. Use an 8BA head gasket on your block or a 99A gasket on a head to locate them. Plug the necessary ports and they should work.

A lot of aftermarket heads were set up more for relieved blocks and had crow foot type chambers. I don't know about the Kong/Flatattack Heads though. Some of the Kong heads were two piece set ups that bolt together then on. I think the Flatattack ones are one piece casting repro of the early Kong types. Flatattack comes up with some wild stuff now and then. Photos would be good.

There is one hole on each head at the front that needs to be plugged. Use the 8BA head gaskets on the engine. They encouraged more coolant flow to the rear of the engine.

Wilcap has an article on it.

Edit: Thought it covered both ways, but this article is 59a heads on 8ba block only!

David jump on the flat attack web site and ask Mike about his heads. He’ll be able to give you the right info that you need.
