Be wary of a new starter. I got one about a year ago and the armature was out of round ! ! by a lot.

Well I did it. Got the new starter in and busted my butt. Laying under the car on a creeper trying to install a 20 lb starter. The new starter with that Bendix drive is a challenge to line up. Going to get the original starter rebuilt and probably put it on eBay. Thanks for all your help.

A good way to go is to convert it 12v. There is a lot of information here on the Barn on which 12v starters are good donors for the case.

I did convert to 12 volt. I removed the 6 volt starter and installed a 12 volt.

LOL, not the same thing. I was referring to covering your original 6v starter to a 12v starter. You can get a later Ford 12v starter out of the late 50s and 60 and merge the pieces together with your existing 6v one and end up with a nice setup. If you are interested in that approach I'll look up some post/articles on it.
