Question About Spare Tire Lock
I was wondering what the proper rear mounted spare tire lock is for a 1931 Coupe. I've seen some that are just a locking device on a lugnut but I can't see where those were original to a Model A. All I can find a reference to is the lock with a band on it. I've looked at the restoration standards book and the service bulletin book. Thanks for any comments.

Service Bulletins page 267 and Standards page 16-9.

Re: Question About Spare Tire Lock
Thanks Bob. I had seen those, so any locking device without the band is not appropriate for the Model A, to perfectly correct?

Re: Question About Spare Tire Lock
Sounds like the locking band is only for rear mounted spares not side mount.

Re: Question About Spare Tire Lock
Jones, Post #3 -
No that is not correct. There are FORD APPROVED accessories and non-Ford approved accessories. The Ford Dealer sold both. Additionally, all of the scores of other accessories sold by Western Auto, Montgomery Ward, Sears Roebuck, Auto Shops, Garages, Gas Stations, etc., etc. are ALL acceptable for application and use on the Ford Model A. The 'crunch' comes when one is interested in building a car expressly for Fine Point Blue Ribbon judging at a MARC / MAFCA judging event. But there too non-Ford approved accessories are acceptable. The number and type is limited, so a thorough reading of the Judging Standards is necessary to sort out which, how many, and what type accessories are acceptable. The Standards are quite specific about what is allowed and what is not. But even so, there is still room for some latitude of one being able to use a number of various kinds of accessories. For example, the Lock that fits over the Lug Nut is acceptable for Fine Point judging, I believe. |

Re: Question About Spare Tire Lock
I have a after market Fulton rear spare tire lock that locks 2 lug nuts and the valve stem on my 1930 coupe.

Re: Question About Spare Tire Lock
Marc Silva, Post #6: "I have one that is a nut with the flat spot and hole for a padlock. Would that be a Monkey Wards or other after market type of accessory?"
------------------------------------------ Yes Marc, it was. A very nice copy of the original is being made (and most likely is what you have) today and is carried by several vendors. For example: Snyder's part # A-1012-LN - $6.75; with a caption that says: "Original equipment on all 1928-'29 Model A's with rear mounted spare." |

Re: Question About Spare Tire Lock
Minerva had a band type lock that was TOO tight for the Firestone tires & left a "permanent" groove in the sidewall!

Re: Question About Spare Tire Lock
Of course, most of us know that the Firestone tires that have been made in the last 50 or so years are noticeably over-sized, from the original specs and from those of other tire manufacturers of today. Troubles with wheel-well fitment is a primary hassle with these over-sized tires, and clearly show just how much Firestone tires are not the correct original size for the Model A.
I like Firestone tires for a number of reasons. But correct 'fitment' ain't one of them. |
