Wide five rims, hubcap clip rivets, and brake drums.
I'm putting juice brakes into my '35 5W, using repop Lincoln backing plates with wide five drums. My front wheels are '36 (see photo), so the rivets that hold the hubcaps protrude into the mounting surface on the drum. I understand that the rivet issue is a '36 only deal. My drums are 37 -39 and bolt right up nicely to my '39 spindles -- and I see that they have that relief machined in the face of the drum to accommodate that rivet. So...here's my question: Did Henry machine this relief into ALL the 36 thru 39 drums, so they'd accept the '36 wheels?
No issue with the back wheels...they're the wider truck wheel with no protruding rivet. Thanks.

Re: Wide five rims, hubcap clip rivets, and brake drums.
Hi Dave.
I have some wide 5 drums from a 39 and they have a recessed band in that area, but still have the dimples. I have some wide 5 wheels but they are inaccessible at the moment so I can't check the rivet situation. It would appear that ford made all the drums compatible with wheels that have the protruding rivets. It begs the question, though, when people run the adaptor plates, do they have rivet clearance holes? I suspect not. Mart. |
