Dipstick dust seal
I haven't found reference to one of these in any of my catalogs and searches of the forum just mention it. Can anyone tell me how to make one, material type etc. The one I have is not in great shape and looks like a dense felt.
Thanks in advance, John

Re: Dipstick dust seal
they were made of a heavy cloth, appear to be some sort of felt, round with a slot for the dipstick

Re: Dipstick dust seal
I made mine out of felt using a hole punch, then slit a slot for the dipstick with a Stanley knife.

I have also seen them made in leather. I think either dense felt or leather would work equally well, but the thickness chosen will have some slight bearing on the accuracy of measurement.

If not find an "O" ring and stretch it over the dipstick. I did this and it seals great.

Re: Dipstick dust seal
Thanks for the suggestions. I guess this is a market opportunity, though not a very big one. Now to find something around here that's made of felt and that doesn't belong to my wife.

Don't worry about a perfect seal. If it doesn't smell like warm oil under the hood, they wouldn't be old cars. lol.

Re: Dipstick dust seal
This is correct. The material was dense wool. NOS measures about 1/8" thick.

Re: Dipstick dust seal
After a little looking around, I found 1/2 OD felt furniture pads at the local hardware store. I cut a slit in the middle and slipped it over the dipstick. Looks good.
A lifetime supply for $4, or enough for your whole collection.

Re: Dipstick dust seal
I'd assume those felt pads to protect furniture would work.

One of your old Stetson hats, they are 4X beaver and a 3/4" hole punch.
Make a few extra for your V8 buddies. Bruce

Re: Dipstick dust seal
Using a piece of felt from one of your old Stetson hats would work very well, if someone asked how the hat got holes in it,? Simply tell them the hat is an old family heirloom, the holes are the result of a shoot out with the neighbors over water rights...

Re: Dipstick dust seal
Another idea, I punched one out of the felt liner of my old Sorel boots.

Re: Dipstick dust seal
Things are always more interesting with a good narrative, besides, the half-inch holes are real close to a .45. Just make sure the holes don't line up with your head, they might suspect something...
