I tried it that way with a screw jack as shown in the vern Tardel book and it warped the housing out of round. I ended up buying a cheap hydraulic press and borrowed an exhaust fitting/press tool from local shop to press it out. I then was able to use the press and re shape the housing back round.

I agree.. pressing it from the top is a better option.

Back in '67 I changed out a 4.11 to a 3.54 in a '34 banjo.I used an aluminum drift and hammered it out.Worked but don't want to do it again like that.

Build a "bridge" thru the housing like in the picture and press it off the pinion without loading the housing. Shouldn't need heat with an adequate press.

A bottle jack on the inside may work; but you don't want your job to be the time it didn't.

Yes... For my 34, this is the way I did it. If I can find the old picture, will edit/add to this post.

Heat the housing to 200 degrees and it will come out easily.

This is exactly the way I do it - there is no load on the housing itself - which is the way you want to do it. Also, you're going to need a press anyway to get it back together (easily) - even with the pinion frozen - so might as well buy one if you don't have one.
