Default 51 Merc hand brake cable

All parts ready to reinstall. Any tips/tricks to get the snake/spring cable back on to the parking brake lever? Backed off the cable to the max but still having problems compressing the spring to connect the cable block end onto the lever. I maybe should have left the lever hooked up to the cable and then removed the lever from the shoe?? Anyone experienced with this?
My knuckles and fingers are paying the price.
Thanks
hoffer

If the cable is tight all the way to the hand lever you may be able to pick up an inch or so by releasing the hand lever and moving it forward.

Yes I can't get the spring retracted enough away from the "end plug" to set the cable back onto the parking lever. Any tip is appreciated.
thanks

Also I backed the cable off the yoke to get more slack but that didn't help much.

Thanks worked as you suggested. The only issue I had was trying to hold the Swede and a needle nose vice grip to old back the spring and trying to hook the cable unto the lever. It helped to have the wife hold the Swede while I held the spring and hooked the cable. Too much for one person to hold all three.
thanks
