The setup on 41rag's car looks like it would be very prone to axle sway.
She handles like a labrador on linoleum. A later model track bar is on the shopping list.

I added the late rear track bar to my '41 Merc and it helped a lot. Also replaced everything in the front suspension that had any wear at all...like the "sway bar" swivels and bushings in particular. I wanted to add the late front track bar but there just isn't enough room to do it properly. I really tried but the axle perch and frame mounts are just not compatible. I even made one that attached behind the axle but couldn't get the geometry close enough to prevent bump steer. However, after replacing all the worn front steering/suspension parts and replacing the original worn steering box with a GM 525 box it's really nice. Finally!

The '46 rear panhard bar I used for the '41 Merc is pictured. Not Fancy but really works well. The shackle side is a 3/4" and a 5/8" bolt welded head to head then welded to the forged perch right above the upper shackle bushing hole. Frame side is angle iron welded to the crossmember with a 5/8 bolt for mounting the bar. My crossmember had no holes originally and is not shaped correctly to allow the stock '46 mount to be used and clear the fuel tank.

p.s. Fortyonerag-your axle perches sure look like '40 to me. I'm no expert though....

Many thanks Terry, this will help a lot.

You might be right about my spring perches, part of having a car that's an 'Older Restoration', I suppose.

Appears that forty41rag incorporates a reversed eye spring, & really don't see a great shackle attitude difference from the initial post to the comparisons posted.
