Default windshield frame size

I have a '29 roadster pick-up I am trying to rebuild. When I attempted to fit the windshield frame between the stanchions, it was too big. This appears to be the correct style windshield for an open roadster, but the frame size seems too big. I have researched through the internet and the books I have, but the dimensions I've seen don't 'jive' with mine. Do I have the wrong windshield frame? Are AA truck frames bigger (assuming there are open style bodies for them)? Are my stanchions 'too tight'...i.e., should there be a 'spacer' behind them? Here are pics I took today with measurements.

Thanks for any help.

Does your windshield frame have slots for rubber strips on both sides of the frame? I can't see the sides in your pictures. If it does, your frame is for a 30/31 roadster, phaeton, or open pickup. 30/31 open vehicle windshield frames are about an inch or two wider than 28/29 open vehicles.

Yes, I took out the glass and 'T' rubber and cleaned up the frame. It is decent except for one corner with rust through. I was hoping I could use it by somehow extending the stanchions outward. If not, maybe shortening the frame from the center point? Not going to spend big bucks on a new frame.

The width is different at the top from what it is at the bottom. This link should help.

You may also have a difference in height dimension. I don't think the 30/31 types are as tall but that may just be deluxe models. Someone else may be able to help more than I can.

Yes, thank you. Notice my measurements. The long distance is measured on the top bar, the short distance I measured across the bottom at the curved part. Has anyone ever altered a wider frame to make it narrower? The 'rodders' shorten them, why not the other way. All new frames I've seen are upwards of $300.

Thanks 'rotorwrench', I just checked the link you provided! Wow, big difference in the prices I've seen from the 'A' vendors. Looks like it's what I need, plus free shipping.

hi, i have a 29 roadster, and my windshield frame is not as tall as the 31, it has a single
channel at the bottom for the rubber seal, no channel on the sides at all. I hope that helps. Yes original 28-9 frames go for around $300 many have some rust out in the bottom due to bad seal in the glass to frame so water collected and rusted them out. I might have an extra that needs some restoration, if you cant find the right one. With best,
Jerbo

Good point jerbo. They were the ones that came with all the extra parts, so I just put them on...never even thought they might be different. None of my research showed any difference in OEM stanchion length between the years. Guess I'll have to check! Thanks.

In the first picture, the primered stantion appears to not be in the right position. The base should line up with the belt raii, it looks to be in to far.

Thanks Ray, I was wondering about that also. It looked correct with the other cowel 'lines' and is 'square' to the edges so I fgured it was right. The third pic in my initial post shows the inside of the stanchion. Someone (my uncle perhaps) welded a piece of steel on both sides to attach the pillars so I don't know exactly what the original mounting configuration looked like. Pic two shows the leading edge of the slot misaligned with the edge of the firewall, so 'angling' the stanchion to match the belt rail would line it up perhaps....??

Definitely not what I've got. I'll take off one of the stanchions and post some pics in a few days. Thank you for the pic Bob C.

Took some more pics of what I have....from what I've researched, the '29 roadster pick-up had solid stanchions with no 2nd pivot at the bottom...? The later ones did...perhaps?

1928-29 stock stanchions did not fold, 1930-31 did.

Then these are correct. Just the mounting area is 'buggered'. I'll do some cleaning of the area and fix some welds previously done when spring temps make it up this way...lol. No heat in my garage to spend extended time out there!

I've seen a lot of old open car cowls with buggered up windshield post components.
