Column shift with '39 pedals?
I'm still considering changing to a '40 column and transmission when I install the flathead this fall. I have '39 pedals (hydraulic brakes) in the '38, which includes the link to the clutch release arm attached directly to the pedal. Will this clutch release link and arm interfere with the shift rods between the column and the transmission? I know that ford went to the tab on the clutch release shaft in '40, was it to clear the shift rods? Hopefully someone here has done it and save me some experimentation.

Re: Column shift with '39 pedals?
I rebuilt a column shift transmission for a '32 with an extended shaft for the throw out fork and clutch arm. The shaft was worn so I replaced it with a new 7/8" dia round, turned and polished shaft when I replaced the bushings in the case. Seems the shaft was extended approx 2".

Re: Column shift with '39 pedals?
40cpe.........Work with me here. This is a picture of a RIGHT-HAND drive '40. It obviously has column shift. Picture a MIRROR image for LHD. Noteably, the clutch linkage runs very near the same place as a LHD '39 clutch arm and activating rod. Like a '40 LHD, the trans shift arms point downward. This ALMOST makes it look "DO-able"! Hope this pic helps. DD

Re: Column shift with '39 pedals?
My 35 has 39 pedals and a 40-41 column shift/ side shift tranny.
So it's doable, I haven't looked at it real close to see if there were any mods done to make it work. |

Re: Column shift with '39 pedals?
The timing of this post could not be better!
I'm currently trying to figure out how the original 40 clutch linkage is setup on a RHD car. Thanks 40cpe for the thread! Thanks V8COOPMAN for the photo! Do you have any more of this RHD 40? Quote:

Re: Column shift with '39 pedals?
I installed a column shift trans and hydraulic brakes in my '36 in 1952. At the time I was not well versed on how to hook up the column shift, and/or master cylinder.
Many problems occurred so I started looking for a better way to hook things up. By the time that 1955 rolled around I had figured out that a '40 steering gear box would bolt into my '36 with no modifications. The complete '40 column would also bolt right into the car, the only problem would be the column lock miss-alignment due to a slight adjustment of the mount to the dash. I removed the lock collar from the steering shaft eliminating the problem. Of course the '36 banjo wheel would not fit the '40 column so I used a '47 steering wheel. A '39 peddle assembly bolted right into the car with no clearance problems for the shift rods to the trans. Since I had already relocated the battery because there was a conflict between the battery and the master cylinder, I did not have any issues there. I did encounter a clearance issue for the upper shift arm and the floor board, shaving a little wood from the plywood floor board solved that issue. I have attached a pix of the engine compartment in my '36 showing the close fit of the column and '40 steering gears.
