Re: Brazilian flathead with clear heads
Lots of interesting stuff there : The distributor seems to be mounted on the fuel pump stand; and that carburetor! My daughter is a professor of Portuguese; maybe I'll see if she can watch this and and see if the guy has anything interesting to say.

Re: Brazilian flathead with clear heads
Pretty cool, some type of wasted spark ignition triggered by fuel pump lobe on camshaft and throttle body fuel injection. Way over my head.

Re: Brazilian flathead with clear heads
Does anyone know, was this a common(or "the") ignition system for Ford Brazil or just something these guys have installed on this particular flathead?

Re: Brazilian flathead with clear heads
Ignition looks to be a crank trigger system of some sort actually not very hard to do. Interesting to watch but it wont survive long with no cooling system what's so ever.

Nice. From this type of vid and others I've watched where you can see the exhaust pulses/flames it always seems that there are cylinders that underperform in terms of power due to airflow/fuel delivery issues. I'm curious as to how they made the ign system work.

Re: Brazilian flathead with clear heads
Ziggster, I thought the same, but it's probably more to do with the "shutter speed" of the camera. I filmed my motor running with one head off and it looks different on film than in real life. I said at the time, "the camera can't keep up".
The ignition is a modern setup with coil packs and probably a crank sensor which may be on that piece bolted near the flywheel. I have a megajolt setup here that uses that principle but I have never used it. There also appears to be some sort of fuel injection setup, so maybe they have full electronic fuelling and ignition control (megasquirt?) He also appeared to be hanging it off the bellhousing which is a definite no-no. It's not an old wives tale. Just don't do it. Mart. |

Re: Brazilian flathead with clear heads
I agree on the crank sensor. I watched when he put the intake on. Nothing is hanging below the intake. It is NOT running off the cam lobe. When he is ready to start the engine, you can see the wires run from the intake mounted ignition coils down to the black plate covering the flywheel. I think his ignition is taking readings from the flywheel and firing the spark plugs.
Very interesting. For display only though. wouldn't really run in a car with that set up!
