If that's an indication of their sincerity and attitudes, you might have been lucky! PHEW!

I signed up. US NAVY, and my wife followed me around with the kids for 20 years, even to Argentia, Newfoundland for my first tour and Ft Monmouth, NJ for my last tour. (Exceptions apply , the USN wouldn't let her accompany me on carrier cruises!)

I learned a lot, Newfoundland was fun, New Jersey was not, and NEVER volunteer still applies.

I think that William not only served on a gunboat up the Yangtze but as most of us have experienced at one time or another (debt, opinion, stash of old Ford parts, etc. etc.) he no doubt was up the Wazoo.

My Uncle was drafted and served in Alaska during WW2 where they made him a Sgt. in the motor pool. He did not even know how to open the hood of a car when he was discharged 4 years later.

The old man who owned his family's ranch in Montana that I ramrodded was homesteaded in 1912 by his parents. All they had was horses, old Harold knew his horses and when he was drafted in WWII he told them that, he became a mule handler. He told his superiors he knew horses not mules, they asked, what's the difference!!!! They had old worn out wagons and buckboards laying around but no cars, they could never could afford one.

Much as we like to think of WWI (1914-1918) as the first "modern" war, the vast majority of cannon and wagons were transported by horses. Motorized vehicles were just staring to make their effect felt in the Great War and were not all that reliable. By 1918, though, the tide was beginning to change. I believe I read somewhere that something like 1,000 horses per day were killed on the Western Front. These were overwhelmingly used by the artillery after they had been mostly withdrawn from the then-useless cavalry. Even in the next world war, horses played an important role in moving supplies. Look at photos showing German artillery and supply wagons being pulled by horses. I think the Korean War (OOPS! PC: Korean "Conflict") was probably the first truly almost militarily horseless war, other than those still used by the indigenous people. It only took 5,000+ years of human evolution to get away from horsepower - which we all want to increase in our Model A's.

"Mule Fritters!!!" One of Colonel Potter's many euphemisms for the expression we're not supposed to use on this website. From now on when I smash a finger and cut an artery while working on a Model A, I'll scream "Mule Fritters" instead of "Oh, sh*t!!!" in my pain while blood spurts all over the garage floor. Now, THAT'LL make me feel better!

In the latest episode of "Combat Dealers" shown here, they unearthed horse gas masks from WWII.

A bit about the series.
