Labor (only) for overhauling engine (reboring/rebabbitting/refitting) cost $25.00 in (say) 1930.

Today the inflation adjustment calculator (http://www.westegg.com/inflation/infl.cgi) puts this in today's dollars as $344.75 - or perhaps 5 hours at possible present hourly rate with overheads?

The hours seems a little small. Even 10 hours ($34 per hour) seems a little small.

We're talking reboring/rebabbitting here.

Good old prices, then again people only made about .25 per hour.

Joe the only problem is that they now all charge several times more than $344.75. I remember when you could get rebuilt short blocks for near that price. The best that I remember, in 1993 Jim Marlar in Birmingham was charging around $1300.00 for a rebuilt long block and a few hundred less for a short block

It's like chrome plating. Without lots of competition, the prices skyrocket. Gasoline is another good example, and the crap gas we have to use isn't near as good as what we bought for 30 cents a gallon.

In 1977 I paid $477 for a complete motor rebuild short block minus the crankshaft from Knight Automotive.

About 1987 I paid $799 for a re-bore/repiston only on a Model B engine used on the Gordon Smith Air Compressor (after the mice had their way with cylinder No. 4)

Yup. Law of supply & demand.
